Feb. 6, 2008

WACO, Texas - The Baylor women's track and field team moved up six spots to No. 7 in the latest United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association rankings released on Wednesday. Baylor's men's team fell five spots to No. 13 overall.

The Lady Bears jump was powered by three new qualifying marks, including an automatic qualifying time in the distance medley relay. Baylor set a new school record and clocked the nation's fastest time of 11:07.00 last weekend at the UW invitational. In addition, Lauren Hagans and Danielle Bradley provisionally qualified in the 3,000 meters and mile, respectively.

Hagans ranks third in the mile, fourth in the 3,000 meters, and 10th in the 800 meters, while Bradley and Nichole Jones are 11th and 12th, respectively, in the mile. Tiffany Townsend ranks fifth in the women's 200 meters and 26th in the 60 meters.

The men's team fell to 13th overall after recording two provisional times at the Husker Invitational. Jacob Norman, the 2006 National Champion in the 60 meters, clocked a time of 6.70 to qualify in the 60 meters, while Trey Harts improved on his time in the 200 meters. Harts ran 21.09 to rank third nationally in the event.

Quentin Iglehart-Summers dropped one spot to third in the 400 meters and the men's 4x400-meter relay fell two spots to fifth overall. Whitney Prevost leads the Big 12 and is ranked ninth in the nation in the 60 meters.

Baylor is off this weekend before returning to action on Feb. 15-16 at the Tyson Invitational in Fayetteville, Ark.

About the USTFCCCA Rankings

The 2008 USTFCCCA Rankings for NCAA Division I squads were devised and are compiled by Tom Lewis of the University of Missouri. Each team is assigned "power points" based on each individual performance on the official NCAA-qualifying list. For the indoor season, spots one to 35 in each event on the national-descending order list receive points based on its position in the national rankings. Additional power points are assigned to each performance based on comparisons with the rest of the field in that event.

Rankings for the indoor season, using 2008 marks, will be released each Wednesday beginning January 30. A complete rundown of the ranking method and a team-by-team breakdown can be found on ustfccca.org.
