Baylor Head Coach Scott Drew:
On the differences between Pat Knight and Bob Knight:
"Wow, coach Knight to coach Knight is definitely a little different. Press, zone: some things that you wouldn't expect. At the same time, knowing Pat a long time, he's very approachable. I can only imagine how tough these last two days were for him. His guys really played hard and really left it all out there for him. Credit him for being able to get them focused and ready."
On his team's performance:
"It wasn't our best performance, but it was great to see some of our bench guys and our front line step up. We did do some positives on the boards, and we got to the free throw line. We did some things that we were trying to do after our last two games."
On getting more production from his posts:
"The inside was open, and our guards made a conscious effort of trying to get to the paint. When we drove and the help would rotate, they made a good extra pass and the bigs finished."
On Josh Lomers' play:
"Josh (Lomers) had one of his best games, really gave us a nice spark and really played well to keep us in it early."
On the better play in the second half:
"Our defensive intensity picked up a little bit, and as any team goes, once you get a couple of turnovers and you get some easy baskets, it gets you more excited to play defense."
Baylor guard Curtis Jerrells:
On going inside and taking fewer three-pointers:
"In order to be a good team you've got to be able to go inside (and) out. We did a good job of getting Josh (Lomers) the ball early and he came through for us. We took a couple but they weren't falling for us, so we went inside and he stepped up for us."
On the importance of winning after losing two straight:
"You don't want to lose three in a row. Two in a row is bad enough. We've got two tough road games coming up, and coming out with a win gives us a little confidence. We'll just get ready for those two games."
On the bench play in the first half:
"It was very important, and our bench played a big role. In the middle of that first half they got us back and then told us to take the wheel, and that's what we did. It all started with defense. In the first couple of minutes we weren't playing very good defense, and their guys did a good job of making their shots."
Baylor center Josh Lomers:
On his career-high 14 points:
"I just went out there, did the best I could and tried to play my role like everybody else. I've just been preparing to play down low and fight for position."
Baylor guard Aaron Bruce:
On the differences between Pat Knight and Bob Knight:
"I don't think there were too many differences. They still did a great job, they didn't beat themselves, and they were still really clinical about what they did. They executed their offense really well. They're still a Knight-coached team, so they are who they are, and I don't think they've changed much at all. They didn't turn the ball over very much. They still did an excellent job playing tonight, but they just caught us at a bad time when we were really hungry and wanted to win."
On getting more production from the post players:
"Our chance tonight was definitely inside. I shot a couple of threes and didn't make them, so I was just trying to do what I could to help the team the best way I could. That meant getting into gaps, finding gaps in the zone and hitting my teammates."
On the importance of winning this game:
"Our motto all along is that the next game is the most important game. We just put those two losses behind us, went back to the drawing board, and watched video to learn from it. The guys did a great job of transferring some of that learning and they did a great job on the boards. That's got to continue to get better because it's going to get harder. We've got Kansas coming up this weekend, and that's going to be a huge test, so we need to step up again."
Texas Tech Head Coach Pat Knight:
On the game:
"I am proud of these guys. I know that the outcome is not what we wanted. All I asked for was two days of preparation and a little effort. I asked [my team] to do a lot of things that they were not used to doing like trapping, ball screens, zone, kicking out full court. I thought they did a heck of a job for me. I can't complain. For my first game to get that kind of effort that is all I can ask for. I think for most coaches that is what you want from your players is the effort because even if you mess up you can overcome some mistakes. Baylor is one of the best teams in our league, and for us to be able to compete on the road is good. We have not won a road game yet. If we would have given this kind of effort for past games, we wouldn't be sitting here 12-9. We have to build off of this."
On his coaching debut:
"It was a blast. I have not had this much fun since I played. As an assistant, you can be on the side, and it's not your head on the chopping block with the press. When you play, you are out there and there is pressure on you. I have not been this nervous or felt this much energy since I was lacing up and playing for my dad."
On the adjustments that Tech made for the Baylor game:
"I like being aggressive. I want this team to be aggressive, and we are going to get after the opponent. I love man to man coverage, but sometimes when teams get into a flow, you have to do something to stop it, even if it is a couple of times in the zone; it gets them out of rhythm. If our man to man isn't working it keeps teams off key and gives us something to fall back on."
On Baylor's Post Production:
"It was obvious that we are not very good in the middle. We have addressed that problem in recruiting, but that won't happen until next year. When you play a 3 point shooting team [like Baylor], we only gave up 2 three pointers. I don't think anyone else has done that this year. When you are not good in the middle you need to take away something, and give up something. I would rather give up the 2 than the 3. Hopefully someday I will not have to give up either one of them. But right now it is the hand that I'm dealt, so that is what we have to do."
