WACO, Texas - Junior guard Jhasmin Player suffered a torn anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) and sprained medial collateral ligament (MCL) in her left knee during the Lady Bears' 63-49 win at Kansas State on Saturday afternoon.
The injury occurred with just under 11 minutes remaining in the first half of the Feb. 2 game versus the Wildcats and will force Player to miss the remainder of the 2007-08 season. Prior to the injury, Player had score six points, the last two of which were scored on the play in which she was injured, a fast-break layup.
Player, one of the team's captains, had started every game this season, and was averaging 12.2 points, 6.0 rebounds and a team-leading 3.5 assists a game.
The Bay City, Texas, native will undergo ACL reconstruction surgery at a later date.
"Ever since Jhasmin set foot in our gym, she's been a huge part of our success. She got to play 21 games of her junior year and played an important part of the team's success this season. She will continue to contribute the rest of the year, just in a different way," said head coach Kim Mulkey. "Things in life happen for a reason, you might not find out for a while what that reason is, but it's there. On the bright side, she's got plenty of time to heal and we don't have to rush the process."
