HEAD COACH Kim Mulkey
On starting the game off shooting cold...
"They did some things defensively that we obviously need to do more work on and that's attacking zones. That's good to slow the pace of the game down, and we had some open looks early and missed them. We were not getting dribble penetration against the zone, nor were we defending penetration very well in our man to man defense. Tomorrow we will work on all of that. Ironically, tomorrow's plan was to attack zones not even knowing what those guys were going to do out there tonight."
On the great play of Melissa Jones and her double-double...
"She could have had a double-double the other night. She was so close. Melissa needs to now understand that she's not a freshman, and it's okay to take over. It's okay to just play ball, and I think the more she hears that from me and the more she feels that on the floor, you're going to see a player just explode."
On the excitement of the week before the season...
"I'm not as excited tonight as I will be next week when we watch film, and we prepare to play both teams. We don't have a lot of a turnaround there. We play Friday and Sunday, so this whole next four days is going to have to be in preparation for not just one team but two teams. We're just starting up again and have to get ready."
Junior Forward Morghan Medlock On the process of being a newcomer and fitting in with the old players...
"I think it's going pretty well. Speaking for the newcomers, our ability to learn quickly, like Coach Mulkey has been stressing since we have been with her, has been the key for us to blend in with the returners. The fact that we're so focused and eager to learn has helped, and the girls that are returners have been a big help in showing us things and helping us in watching film. It's been pretty good."
Sophomore Melissa Jones On not being surprised when Coach took out the starters...
"I feel like we have a solid all around team, so I'm not surprised when anyone comes out or when anyone goes in."
On getting ready for the start of real games...
"These games that we've had have definitely been a learning experience. We've been going against each other in practice, so finally to get some teams and play against some other girls, it was good to go after them. I think it's more of an adrenaline rush to start and get against these big teams with Stanford coming up. We're not overlooking anyone but are getting ready for the real season."
