PALM SPRINGS, Calif. - No. 27 Csilla Borsanyi defeated Andrea Remynse of UCLA 6-3, 6-3 to claim the Flight Two singles title at the 2008 Duals in the Desert. Taylor Ormond and Jelena Stanivuk both lost in their respective singles finals.
No. 34 Ormond, who upset the second- and fifth-ranked singles players earlier in the weekend dropped a three-set match to sixth-ranked Maria Mosolova of Northwestern 6-1, 1-6, 6-4 at flight one. No. 97 Stanivuk dropped a decision to No. 38 Gabriela Niculescu of Southern California 6-2, 6-0 at flight three.
No. 120 Karolina Filipiak defeated Alexandra Luc of Clemson 6-4, 6-2 in the fifth-place match at flight four singles. Kasia Siwosz downed Lindsay Kinstler of Southern California 6-4, 6-1 in the fifth-place match at flight five singles. At flight six singles, Zuzana Chmelarova defeated Cristie Andrews of Southern California 6-3, 6-3 to claim fifth place.
"It was extremely windy today, but most of our ladies had the toughness of mind to handle it," said head coach Joey Scrivano. "You have to give credit to Mosolova. She played very well in the third set and didn't give Taylor an inch. This was another solid showing for Csilla. She has improved so much since August and there is still a lot of room for her to grow. I really like the way Kasia, Karo, and Zuzi played out here. They were more aggressive and played with a sense of urgency. It was great to see."
Ormond and Borsanyi continue play at the ITA National Indoor Championships in Charlottesville, Va. next weekend, while the remainder of the Lady Bears end their fall season.
