WACO, Texas - Baylor junior Curtis Jerrells has been named a candidate for the 2008 Bob Cousy Award, awarded annually to the nation's top collegiate point guard. The 40-man list of preseason candidates was released in the 2007-08 Athlon Sports College Basketball Preview magazine, which is on newsstands now.
Jerrells returns for his third year as a starter in head coach Scott Drew's backcourt in 2007-08. Last season, Jerrells led the Bears in scoring (15.0 ppg), assists (3.8 apg) and minutes (32.9 mpg) and was an honorable mention All-Big 12 selection. Jerrells led Baylor with a 13.5 scoring average as a freshman in 2005-06.
A native of Austin, Texas, Jerrells came on strong at the end of his sophomore season. He scored in double-digits in each of Baylor's final 14 games and averaged 25 points and eight rebounds at the Big 12 Championship en route to being named to the All-Tournament team.
Jerrells is one of four guards from the Big 12 Conference named to the preseason watch list for the Cousy Award (along with D.J. Augustin of Texas, Stefhon Hannah of Missouri and Russell Robinson of Kansas), which was awarded last year to Texas A&M's Acie Law IV.
