WACO, Texas - The National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) recently announced the national attendance figures for the 2006-07 Division I women's basketball season. Baylor finished the year ranked 11th in the country in home attendance with and average of 6,295 fans a contest. In addition, Big 12 women's basketball broke its own NCAA record while leading the nation in attendance for the eighth consecutive year.
For the second straight season, Baylor cracked the 100,000 barrier and set a single-season total attendance record. Last year the Lady Bears drew 100,316 fans and they finished the 2006-07 campaign with 119,603 fans passing through the turnstiles.
The Lady Bears also broke the all-time Ferrell Center total attendance record (men's or women's) of 109,494 set in 2001-02 with 119,603 fans this past season. In addition, Baylor has ranked in the top 25 in attendance every season since Kim Mulkey became the program's head coach.
Baylor was the fourth-highest ranked team in the Big 12 behind Texas Tech's 10,668 a contest. Other Big 12 schools who beside Baylor and Texas Tech ranked in the top 15 were Oklahoma at fourth (10,437) and Iowa State at seventh (8,906).
Tennessee led the national attendance with 14,678 per game while Connecticut was second at 10,802.
Big 12 women's basketball broke its own NCAA record while leading the nation in attendance for the eighth consecutive year. The league totaled 1,023,576 fans for a 5,170 average in 2006-07, the NCAA announced.
The Big 12 held the previous NCAA record with 1,002,251 spectators in 2002 and is the only league to hit the one million mark. The conference averaged over 5,000 fans in 2006-07 for the sixth time since 2001 and has recorded six of the seven 5,000 averages in NCAA history.
