IRVING, Texas - Junior Lars Poerschke (Buseck, Germany) was named the Big 12 Men's Tennis Player of the Week for his performance this past week the conference announced Monday.
Poerschke, ranked at the No. 14 spot, helped lead the Bears to three victories over opponents ranked in the top 30 and claimed three wins over ranked players as Baylor clinched its sixth straight Big 12 regular season title.
Poerschke defeated No. 88 Dimitar Kutrovsky of Texas in a two set match 6-4, 6-2 as the Bears cruised to a 6-1 victory over the 12th-ranked Longhorns. He followed that performance with a 7-6(3), 2-6, 6-3 downing of Oklahoma State's No. 30 Oleksandr Nedovyesov as Baylor edged the No. 7 Cowboys 4-3. To wrap up regular season play, Poerschke claimed a 6-3, 6-4 victory over No. 62 Vaclav Kucera of Oklahoma as the Bears clinched their sixth consecutive Big 12 regular season title with a 5-2 win over the Sooners. Poerschke finished with a 24-8 overall record, 5-1 in conference play.
At No. 2 doubles, Poerschke claimed three victories with teammate Michal Kokta. The duo owns a 5-2 overall record and are 3-0 in Big 12 action. This marks Poerschke's second weekly honor of the season and the fourth of his career.
Poerschke and the Bears are back in action when they head to Kansas City, Missouri April 26-29 for the Big 12 Championships.
