WACO, Texas - Lyndsy Bedell has been named to the inaugural Spring Sports Good Works Team the Big 12 Conference office announced on Thursday. One student-athlete from each institution is selected for recognition based upon significant community service efforts, good academic standing, and participation in a Big 12-sponsored sport.

"Lyndsy is the model of what a true student-athlete should be," said Head Coach Todd Harbour. "She was our team captain during the cross-country season this fall, and she is a natural leader. She has been a pleasure to coach because she is truly a great person and an extremely hard worker."

Bedell (Plano, Texas) volunteers in the Waco community by visiting local elementary schools as part of a reading program. She visits area kids and reads with them, helping to improve reading skills as well as providing the children with a college-aged role model. Bedell also volunteers with the Lil' Wrangler Round-Up, a community service effort organized by Baylor Athletics and the Hillcrest Health System. The event brings together Baylor student-athletes and community children affected by cancer.

In the classroom, Bedell holds a 3.92 grade point average in Health Science Studies/Physical Therapy. The junior was named to the fall and spring Big 12 Commissioner's Honor Roll as a freshman and sophomore, and already during the fall semester of her junior year. She also earned Academic All-Big 12 first team honors during the fall and spring as a sophomore, and during fall semester as a junior, with a perfect 4.0 GPA in those semesters.

Bedell is a five-time All-Big 12 performer, earning two all-conference honors this season at the 2007 Big 12 Indoor Championships. She placed third in the women's 5,000 meter run, and was sixth in the women's 3,000 meter run. Bedell is a two-time All-Big 12 selection in the women's 3,000-meter steeplechase. Earlier this season, Bedell clocked a time of 10:24.01 in the 3,000-meter steeplechase, a regional qualifying mark and a personal best of more than six seconds.

"I really enjoy working with kids and helping out in the community," said Bedell. "I help out during the week when I can, and then try to schedule something whenever we have an open weekend because it's something that I enjoy."

The Baylor track and field teams are back in action on Saturday as the Bears travel to Denton, Texas to compete in the North Texas Classic. A recap of the day's events as well as complete results will be posted on www.BaylorBears.com.
