WACO, Texas - The Baylor track and field teams won 22 events and set nine regional qualifying marks at the 2007 Dr Pepper Invitational held on Saturday at the Hart-Patterson Track and Field Complex.
Highlighting the afternoon was Brittany Devereaux's (Denton, Texas) school record effort in the women's hammer throw. The junior had a best toss of 44.06 meters (144-07) breaking the six-year old mark of 141-06 by more than one foot.
Devereaux also took top honors in the women's discus throw with a regional qualifying mark of 51.27 meters (168-02), winning the event by nearly 40 feet.
"All in all, I thought this was a good meet," said head coach Todd Harbour. "We had a lot of people win their events, we had several regional qualifying marks, and we had a lot of personal records."
The men's and women's 4x100-meter relay teams won with regional qualifying times. The women's team of DeAna Carson (Long Beach, Calif.), Carla Grace (San Antonio, Texas), Tiana Hood (Long Beach, Calif.), and Katrina Taylor (Baton Rouge, La.) finished in 45.16. The men's squad of Reggie Witherspoon (Marietta, Ga.), Trey Harts (Lake Charles, La.), Courtney Thomas (Kilgore, Texas), and Jacob Norman (Temple, Texas) recorded a time of 40.43.
Hood won the women's 100 meter dash in 11.92, while Carson finished third at 12.33. Norman and Thomas finished one-two in the men's 100 meters as both runners clocked regional qualifying times in the first meet of the spring. Norman finished at 10.45, while Thomas came in at 10.49.
"It was good to see Jacob Norman back in top form with a good race and a regional qualifying time. Our 4x100-meter relay team did well not to drop the stick on the first race of the year, and they got a fast time as well."
Baylor's women's 4x400-meter relay team took first place with a regional qualifying time of 3:41.14. The winning squad was comprised of Tillman, Grace, Hood, and Taylor.
The top eight men's 400 runners were split into two relay teams, and recorded times of 3:18.38 and 3:18.38 to win the event.
"We were a little disappointed with how our meet ended with our men's 4x400-meter relay," said Harbour. "We had some guys decide to take the afternoon off, and I want to apologize to our fans that stayed to watch us run."
The Baylor men again dominated the open 400 meters, taking the top four positions. Kevin Mutai (Round Rock, Texas) took first in a regional qualifying time of 47.16. J.T. Scheuerman was second with 47.53, R.J. Anderson took third with a time of 47.67, and Mark Teter finished fourth in 48.38.
