COLUMBUS, Ohio - Despite losing in the first round of the prestigious 32-player ITA National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships on Thursday, Denes Lukacs rebounded in consolation play and upset seventh-ranked Erling Tviet of Mississippi in straight sets.
In action at the Racquet Club of Columbus in Columbus, Ohio, the 78th-ranked Lukacs breezed to a 6-3, 6-1 win. The Eger, Hungary native will take on second-ranked Steven Moneke of Ohio State who advanced with a 6-2, 6-4 victory over No. 5 Luke Shields of Boise State.
"Denes played a very solid match against a top 10 player. The consolation draw is as tough as the main draw at this tournament. To beat a player of Tveit's caliber shows how much Denes has progressed since his freshman year," said Baylor assistant coach Kyle Spencer.
While Lukacs saw his 10-match win streak halted on Thursday, fellow sophomore Attila Bucko extended his streak to seven matches with a triumph in the round of 32 of the Texas Invitational on Friday at the Allison Pennick Tennis Center in Austin, Texas.
Bucko, who entered the singles draw as the No. 4 seed, downed Oregon's Romeo Mortera on Friday, 6-2, 6-2. Next up for the Wellington, Fla., native is a round of 16 matchup with Dmitry Novikov of Texas A&M-CC. This will be the second meeting of the fall season between the two, Bucko posted a 6-3, 7-5 win over Novikov in the consolation semifinals of the South Central Regional in Austin on Oct. 23.
