Volleyball Falls to Third-Ranked Texas

WACO, Texas - Destinee Hooker and Juliann Faucette tallied 14 kills apiece to lead four players in double-figure kills as Texas defeated Baylor 3-0 (30-21, 30-20, 30-25) on Saturday afternoon at the Ferrell Center. Baylor, who lost its last four matches by 3-2 scores, dropped its fifth-straight contest.

Haley Thomas and Kelsey Smith each recorded nine kills for Baylor, while Anna Breyfogle added six kills for the Bears. Baylor was without the services of outside hitter Katie Sanders, who missed the match with an injury.

Thomas recorded a career-high 12 digs in her first action in the back row. Taylor Barnes added 11 digs and a service ace to go along with four kills for the Bears.

Texas (22-3, 17-1 Big 12) entered the match with a nation-leading .346 hitting percentage, recorded 54 kills and 19 hitting errors in 127 total attempts to hit .276 for the match, its third-lowest total in Big 12 action.

Baylor (14-15, 6-12 Big 12), who averaged just 2.45 blocks per game over the last four matches, tallied 12 blocks in three games, led by Breyfogle's eight total blocks (one solo). Thomas and Smith each recorded four blocks for the Bears.

The teams traded serves through the first 20 points until Texas scored two straight to take a 13-11 lead. The Longhorns stretched the lead to as many as five points before Baylor rallied to cut the lead to 20-19 to force a Texas timeout.

Texas scored 10 of the next 12 points, including five in a row off the serve of Alyson Jennings to win the first game 30-21.

Smith, Christenson and Thomas each recorded three kills in the first game, while Breyfogle tallied four blocks including one solo. Faucette led the Longhorns with four kills and five digs.

Baylor jumped out to a 4-0 lead following three Texas hitting errors and a Baylor block. The Longhorns rallied to tie the score at seven apiece on a kill from Hooker. Texas led 21-16 when Baylor called its second timeout and pulled away for the 30-20 win.

Three Texas players tallied five kills apiece in game two, while Breyfogle and Thomas each recorded three kills for the Bears. The Longhorns tallied 23 digs to Baylor's 14 in game two.

The two teams played evenly through the first 25 serves of game three, with neither team gaining more than a three point lead. Texas went up by four points at 20-16 on a Hooker service ace. Baylor scored six straight points, including three straight blocks from Breyfogle and Thomas to take a 22-20 lead.

Texas tied the score at 24 apiece and took the lead on an Ashley Engle kill. The Longhorns scored six of the last seven points to win the third game 30-25.

Smith tallied four kills for the Bears, while Breyfogle added four blocks in the third game alone. Faucette tallied six kills for Texas as the Longhorns connected on 20 kills in the third game.

Baylor stays at home on Wednesday night as the Bears play host to second-ranked Nebraska on Senior Night. First serve from the Ferrell Center is scheduled for 6:30 p.m.
