Cross Country Places 10 on Academic All-Big 12 Team

WACO, Texas - The Baylor cross country teams placed 10 student-athletes, including nine first-team selections, on the 2007 Academic All-Big 12 Cross Country team, the league office announced on Tuesday.

Leading the way for Baylor is a trio of runners that have scored in each meet for the Lady Bears. Nichole Jones has been Baylor's top finisher in all four meets this season, including individual victories at the Baylor Twilight Invitational and the BYU Autumn Classic.

Lauren Hagans and Lyndsy Bedell have also placed in the top five for Baylor, with Hagans finishing as Baylor's second runner on three occasions. Bedell was the Bears' second point finisher at the Notre Dame Invitational.

On the men's side, John Wenhold earned first-team honors for the Bears. The junior has scored for Baylor in two meets this season. Jordan Hiller earned second-team accolades, and has scored in all four competitions this season for the Bears.

Nominated by each institution's director of student-athlete support services and the media relations offices, the men's cross country academic all-league squad consisted of 36 first team members combined with 12 on the second team, while the women had 55 first team recipients and nine student-athletes on the second team. First team members consist of those who have maintained a 3.20 or better GPA, and the second team are those who have a 3.00 to 3.19 GPA.

To qualify student-athletes must maintain a 3.00 GPA or higher either cumulative or the two previous semesters and must have participated in 60 percent of his/her team's scheduled contests. Freshmen and transfers are not eligible in their first year of academic residence. Senior student-athletes who have participated for a minimum of two years and meet all the criteria except percent of participation are also eligible.

Baylor returns to action on Friday morning when the men's and women's teams travel to Lubbock, Texas to participate in the 2007 Big 12 Cross Country Championships at Rawls Golf Course. The men's 8,000 meter race is scheduled to begin at 10 a.m., with the women's race starting at 11 a.m.
