AUSTIN, Texas - Despite rain delays that set the start time back approximately five hours on Monday, sophomore Denes Lukacs advanced to the finals in the ITA South Central Regional Championships at the Penick-Allison Tennis Center on the University of Texas at Austin campus. In doing so, he secured a spot in the ITA National Intercollegiate Championships in Columbus, Ohio, Nov. 1-4. In addition, Lukacs and his doubles partner, David Galic, have advanced to the tournament semifinals.
Lukacs continued to mow down his opponents, posting two straight-set victories on Monday, to advance to the tournament finals. With the two victories, the sophomore from Eger, Hungary, lengthened his win streak to nine matches and has won 13 of his last 14 contests and is 15-2 during fall play. In Monday's action he dispatched Piotre Banas of UL-Lafayette, 6-1, 6-4, and downed 80th-ranked Luis Diaz Barriga, 6-2, 6-2.
Lukacs, ranked No. 78, will take on Texas A&M's No. 37 Conor Pollock in the championship match at 9:30 a.m., on Tuesday.
In Monday doubles action, Baylor's Attila Bucko and Dominik Mueller fell to Texas Tech's Michael Breler and Sinisa Markovic, 8-3. Baylor two other teams played each other when Matt Brown and Jordan Rux meet up with Galic and Lukacs. Galic and Lukacs were victorious 8-1. They will now take on Luis Diaz Barriga and Kellen Damico of Texas in semifinal action.
Sophomore Attila Bucko continued to win in consolation and has advanced to the finals with a wins over Texas Tech's Breler, 6-2, 6-3 and Dmitry Novikov (Texas A&M-CC) 6-3, 7-5.
