THE LADY BEARS...
The Baylor Lady Bears, riding an 11-game win streak, began Big 12 Conference action after playing its most challenging non-conference schedule in program history. Baylor played three teams ranked among the Associated Press' top 25 (No. 12 Purdue, No. 9 LSU, No. 22 BYU) and two others who are receiving votes (Hofstra, UCLA).
Through 15 games, three players are averaging double-digit scoring but the Lady Bears have plenty of balance as six players average 7.7 or more points a game.
Senior All-America candidate Bernice Mosby leads the way with 17.2 a game while junior point guard Angela Tisdale scores 11.6 points and freshman post Danielle Wilson manages 10.3. Sophomore Jessica Morrow scores 9.5 an outing while freshman Latara Darrett tallies 8.8 and sophomore post Rachel Allison scores 7.7.
Mosby is averaging a team-leading 8.7 rebounds a game while Allison is the squad's second-leading rebounder with 6.9 a contest and is followed by Wilson's 6.7.
NO. 1 IN NCAA BLOCKING STATISTICS...
The Lady Bears come into the contest ranked No. 1 in NCAA Division I statistics (through games of Dec. 31) in blocked shots per game at 8.4. Undefeated and second-ranked North Carolina is No. 2 (8.1) while third-ranked Duke sits at No. 3 with 7.7 an outing. In total blocks through games of Jan. 3, Baylor's 124 rejections rank No. 2 behind North Carolina's 130.
Freshman post Danielle Wilson ranks No. 6 nationally in blocks per game with 3.4. In total blocks on the season, Wilson sits at No. 6 with 50. Only two freshmen have registered more blocks this season than Wilson, Michigan State's Allyssa DeHaan has 63 and Xavier's Amber Harris has 54.
With her five blocks against North Carolina A&T, Wilson cracked BU's single season top 10. Now with 50 on the season, she sits at No. 4 on the list and needs three to join Maggie Davis-Stinnett (1987-88) at No. 3.
