Sept. 4, 2006

NEW YORK - Former Baylor tennis player Benjamin Becker posted a bittersweet win in third round action of the U.S. Open on Sunday at the Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing, N.Y. With the victory, Becker won the right to face 9th-seeded Andy Roddick in fourth round action on Monday.

In beating Agassi, Becker instantly cemented his name in sports trivia. Earlier in the year, Agassi announced that he would end his professional career at the U.S. Open.

With the crowd clearly in Agassi's favor, the 25 year old Becker, in his first season as a professional and ranked No. 112, used his powerful serve to defeat the popular American in four sets, 7-5, 6-7(4), 6-4, 7-5. Becker, representing his native Germany, registered 27 aces in the match to raise his tournament leading total to 54. Agassi ranks No. 2 in the tournament in aces with 47 while Becker's Monday opponent, Roddick has drilled 45 aces.

Roddick, winner of the U.S. Open in 2003, advanced to fourth round action by defeating 22nd-seeded Fernando Verdasco in five sets on Sunday.
