WACO, Texas -- Anna Schuch's goal in the 33rd minute coupled with five saves by Baylor goalkeeper Ashley Holder propelled the Bears to a 1-0 victory over Samford in action at Betty Lou Mays Field. With the victory, Baylor improves to 3-4-1 on the season while Samford falls to 5-3-0 on the year with the loss.
"It was a great victory for this team," head coach George Van Linder said. "I thought we did a good job of controlling possession and finished off a good weekend with the win. I think the entire team is looking forward to opening conference play next weekend."
Baylor had the game's first good chance in the 9th minute as Anna Schuch blasted a shot that was saved off the line by a Samford defender in the ninth minute as the Bulldogs managed to keep the game scoreless.
Schuch managed to put the Bears on the board in the 33rd minute as she collected a pass from Betsy Kyle and easily beat the Samford goalie on a one-on-one to give Baylor a 1-0 lead. The assist was the first of Kyle's career as Schuch collected her second consecutive game-wining goal.
The goal managed to hold up for the Bears as Holder made a pair of key diving saves to preserve the shutout victory, her third shutout of the season and the sixth of her career.
Baylor's victory over Samford marked the third consecutive shutout at home for the Bears as a visiting team has not scored at Betty Lou Mays Field this season.
Cayley Winters made four saves in goal for the Bulldogs and took the loss.
Baylor will return to action on Friday, Sept. 22, as the Bears host Texas A&M to open the Big 12 Conference season at 7:00 p.m.
