HOUSTON, Texas -- Houston managed an early goal and added a penalty kick late as the Cougars defeated the Baylor soccer team, 2-0, in the road opener for the Bears. With the loss, Baylor falls to 1-1-0 on the season while Houston improves to 2-0-0 on the year.
Houston managed to break through early as Jordan Godbolt took a cross from Sophia Mundy and drove just to the left of Baylor goalie Ashley Holder in the ninth minute to give the Cougars the early 1-0 lead.
The score would remain the same throughout, until a foul on Baylor in the 85th minute inside the penalty box gave the Cougars the chance to put the game away. Courtney Gaines connected on the penalty kick as Houston managed to take a two-goal lead.
Baylor was unable to rally late as the Bears fell to 2-1 all-time against Houston.
Holder took the loss for Baylor after making one save on the day.
Houston's Shelby Scott picked up the shutout victory after making four saves.
The shots were tied at 13-13 as Anna Schuch led the way for Baylor with three shots on the contest. Tara Lomas added two shots-on-goal for the Bears in the loss.
Baylor will return to action on Fri., Sept. 1, at 7:00 p.m. when the Bears will hit the road to face Indiana in Lawrence, Ind., to take part in the Big 12-Big 10 Conference Challenge.
