The Baylor women's basketball team announced its 2006-07 schedule today, one that features at least 16 home games. Head coach Kim Mulkey and the Lady Bears will begin regular season action on Friday, Nov. 10, when they host North Texas at the Ferrell Center in the first round of the Preseason Women's National Invitation Tournament (WNIT).
Baylor joins 15 other teams in the single-elimination Preseason WNIT which includes 11 teams that played in the postseason last season. If victorious in the first round, Baylor would play the winner of the Hofstra at Wichita State game, quite possibly in the Ferrell Center. The semifinals are Nov. 16 with the championship game set for Nov. 19. All games will be played on campus sites.
In addition, Baylor will play at least 10 teams and 12 games against teams that participated in 2006 postseason competition. LSU, Southeast Missouri, UCLA, Missouri, Texas A&M and Oklahoma all saw action in the NCAA Tournament while Kansas, Kansas State, Nebraska and Iowa State were Postseason WNIT participants.
"I feel like we've put together a pretty tough schedule, one that will challenge our team from day one. With at least 12 games against 2006 postseason teams, our six newcomers and three sophomores will have the opportunity to prove themselves early. We most definitely have a non-conference schedule that will prepare us for the challenges that await us in the Big 12 Conference," said Mulkey.
Baylor's non-conference schedule includes eight home games and three road contests. In addition to the North Texas game, home contests include matchups against LSU (Nov. 21), Texas A&M-Corpus Christi (Nov. 30), Southeast Missouri State (Dec. 2), Sam Houston State (Dec. 4), University of Arkansas-Pine Bluff (Dec. 13), North Carolina A&T (Dec. 28) and Prairie View A&M (Dec. 30). The Lady Bears will travel only twice in non-conference action. Over the Thanksgiving break they will travel to Freeport, Grand Bahamas, where they will take on Central Florida (Nov. 24) in the Junkanoo Jam. In second day Jam action (Nov. 25), BU will play either Virginia or South Dakota State before returning home. On Dec. 17 Baylor will play at UCLA.
The Big 12 season begins on Jan. 3 at the Ferrell Center, when Texas Tech comes to town. The Lady Bears will also host Big 12 foes Oklahoma (Jan. 10), 2006 Postseason WNIT champion Kansas State (Jan. 20) and Missouri (Jan. 31) in January. The month of February will feature home games against Iowa State (Feb. 10), Oklahoma State (Feb. 14), Texas (Feb. 18) and Texas A&M (Feb. 25).
The Big 12 schedule sends Baylor on the road to Kansas (Jan. 6), Texas A&M (Jan. 13), Texas (Jan. 24), Oklahoma State (Jan. 27), Nebraska (Feb. 3), Texas Tech (Feb. 7) Colorado (Feb. 21) and Oklahoma (Feb. 28).
For the first time, Oklahoma City and the Cox Center will host the Big 12 Championship on March 6-8 & 10. The NCAA Tournament's first and second rounds are set for March 17-20, while the Sweet 16 and Elite Eight rounds will occur March 24-27. The NCAA season concludes at the Final Four, April 1 and 3, in Cleveland at the Quicken Loans Arena.
Baylor will play two exhibition games in early November, hosting Louisiana College on Nov. 2 and the Houston Jaguars on Nov. 7, both at 7 p.m.
Baylor will announce times and TV schedules as soon as available. All dates and times are tentative.
