2006 NCAA MIDWEST REGIONAL
Friday-Saturday, May 26-27
Mike A. Myers Stadium - Austin, Texas
Baylor will be represented by 28 student-athletes, 15 women and 13 men, at the 2006 NCAA Midwest Regional Friday and Saturday, May 26-27, at Mike A. Myers Stadium in Austin, Texas.
The top five finishers in the finals of each event in each of the four regions will advance to the 2006 NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships June 8-11 at Alex G. Spanos Sports Complex in Sacramento, Calif. The rest of the championship field is filled with five to seven at-large selections from top 12 finishers overall based on season-best times.
Many of the Bears currently rank among the top five in the Midwest Region, while several others rank among the top 10 and could make a run at the finals. Junior Reggie Witherspoon, the Big 12 indoor and outdoor champion, is ranked third in the region in the 400 meters, while senior Jerome Miller is also ranked third in the 110-meter hurdles. Senior Chris Gillis, the Big 12 outdoor long jump champion ranks third in an outstanding regional field that features five of the top six leapers in the nation. The men's 4x100- and 4x400-meter relays both claimed Big 12 titles and are both ranked third.
On the women's side, senior Angel Perkins ranks fourth in the 400 meters and freshman Erin Bedell ranks fourth in the 1,500 meters, both were the Big 12 runner-up in their respective events. Sophomore Lyndsy Bedell ranks fifth in the 3,000-meter steeplechase. In the same fashion as the men, the women's 4x100-meter relay and Big 12 champion 4x400-meter relay each rank third.
This year marks the third year of regional competition since the NCAA adopted the format. The Midwest Region is made up of every Big 12 school except Missouri, and includes the entire states of Texas, Oklahoma, Kansas, Nebraska, Iowa, Minnesota, New Mexico, Colorado and Wyoming. The three other regionals taking place are the East (Greensboro, N.C.); Mideast (Knoxville, Tenn.) and the West (Provo, Utah).
