DES MOINES, Iowa - The Baylor women's distance medley relay of sophomore Lauren Hagans (Little Rock, Ark.), freshman Katrina Taylor (Baton Rouge, La.), junior Ruth Waller (Manchester, England) and freshman Erin Bedell (Plano, Texas) broke the school record set earlier this year with a time of 11:15.32 to finish third Friday at the 97th Drake Relays at Drake Stadium.
The old record of 11:19.45 was set by Hagans, junior Lauren Tillman (Lawrenceville, Ga.), Waller and Bedell at the Texas Relays on April 8, breaking the previous mark of 11:30.35 set in 1991.
Tillman finished eighth in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 1:00.27, while senior Shanta Bibbs (San Antonio, Texas) finished 11th in 1:00.44.
Senior Jerome Miller (Houston, Texas) finished second in the 400-meter hurdles with another regional qualifying time of 51.62, while senior Chris Gillis (Pennsauken, N.J.) finished second in the long jump with a mark of 7.61 meters (24-11 ¾).
The men's 4x400-meter relay of freshman R.J. Anderson (Big Pine Key, Fla.), junior Reggie Witherspoon (Marietta, Ga.), junior Kevin Mutai (Round Rock, Texas) and freshman Quentin Iglehart-Summers (San Antonio, Texas) posted the fastest qualifying time at 3:07.52.
The women's 4x100-meter relay of senior Marquisha Sefas (Ft. Worth, Texas), junior Kandace Tucker (Irving, Texas), senior Angel Perkins (Cerritos, Calif.) and sophomore Carla Grace (San Antonio, Texas) ran the fastest time in the prelims, clocking 44.83. The same group ran the fastest time in the 4x200-meter relay, but was disqualified for an illegal handoff with a protest pending.
The men's 4x100-meter relay of senior Miller, Witherspoon, freshman Queito Teasley (Katy, Texas) and sophomore Jeremy Jackson (Round Rock, Texas) qualified sixth for the finals with a time of 40.74.
Jackson finished ninth in the prelims of the 110-meter hurdles with a time of 14.44, one place out of qualifying for the finals. Sefas finished 15th in the 100-meters with a time of 12.03.
The women's 4x400-meter relay of Tillman, Grace, Taylor and Tucker qualified second for the finals with a time of 3:41.07.
The men's 4x1,600-meter relay of sophomore Rey Hinojosa (Cedar Park, Texas), junior Cody Wells (Crawford, Texas) and seniors Rob Morrow (Grapevine, Texas) and Bo Price (Atlanta, Texas) finished 13th with a time of 16:59.71.
Thursday night at the Jason's Deli Mean Green Twilight in Denton, Texas, junior Chris Cardwell (Abilene, Texas) broke his own school record to win the hammer throw with a mark of 51.70 meters (169-7). Sophomore Brittany Devereaux (Denton, Texas) threw over 170 feet for the second straight week with a toss of 51.95 meters (170-5) to finish third in the discus in front of her hometown crowd.
The Bears continue action at the Drake Relays Saturday.
