After a week off, the No. 6 Baylor men's tennis team will return to action tomorrow night against No. 4 Texas with a full week of conference play ahead. Baylor will host the last three of their seven-match conference schedule this week before heading into the Big 12 conference. The Wednesday, April 19 match against No. 4 University of Texas will begin at 6 p.m.
Wednesday's match against Texas will be one of Baylor's toughest matches this season. After a loss to No. 18 Texas A&M last week, Baylor sits at 3-1 in conference play with three matches left in regular season. Texas is 5-0 and has only Baylor and Texas A&M left to play.
In the latest Fila/ITA Collegiate Rankings, Baylor and Texas both received numerous honors. For Baylor, four players earned singles rankings and two doubles teams found themselves in the top 40 nationally. No. 9 Lars Poerschke leads the ranks for the Bears while Michal Kokta received the No. 41 spot and Matija Zgaga followed at No. 50. No. 115 Matt Brown rounds out the group of ranked Bears. The team of Kokta and Poerschke also earned a nod in the doubles rankings at No. 28.
Texas had three players earn rankings in the top 55. No. 11 Travis Helgeson tops the ranks for the Longhorns while Callum Beale and Roger Gubser follow at No. 44 and No. 54 respectively. In doubles, the team of Helgeson and Marcus Venus earned a spot at No. 40 while Beale and Miguel Reyes Varela came in at No. 46.
Baylor will face another tough match on Friday when they take on No. 25 Colorado at 6 p.m. Colorado also has only one loss in conference play going 4-1 and having only Baylor and Texas Tech left on the regular season schedule. Colorado is coming off a big week upsetting No. 17 Texas A&M 4-2 but falling to then-No.3 Texas 5-2.
Sunday, April 23 will mark the Bears final regular season conference match against No. 63 Nebraska. The match time is set at 1 p.m. Nebraska is 0-6 in conference action, 10-10 overall. They will face No. 46 Texas Tech on Friday before traveling to Waco to take on the Bears.
For the Texas match, there will be an HEB tailgate package for the first 50 fans as well as free pizza for any organization with 20 or more people in attendance.
