WACO, Texas - Three 2005-06 Baylor Lady Bear hoopsters will travel to different parts of the nation this week as they embark on WBNA careers.
Sophia Young was the fourth player taken in the recent WNBA draft and will report to the San Antonio Silver Stars next week. Although they weren't drafted, Abiola Wabara and Chameka Scott both have received invitations to WNBA camps and will leave next week as well.
Wabara, a free agent, has been invited to camp by the Los Angeles Sparks. The Sparks posted a 17-17 record last season and finished fourth in the Western Division. The Big 12 Conference Co-Defensive Player of the Year, Wabara, a 6-0 forward/post, averaged 8.7 points and 5.8 rebounds a game for Baylor and led the team in blocked shots (40) and also tallied 44 steals.
Scott signed a contract on April 14 and will get a tryout with the reigning WNBA champion Sacramento Monarchs. The California team finished the 2005 season with a 25-9 record. Scott, a 6-0 guard/forward, averaged 8.7 points a game last season and ranked second on the Baylor squad in rebounding at 6.4 an outing. In addition, she recorded 57 steals and 20 blocks.
Young was the first player drafted by San Antonio after the squad finished seventh in the league's Western Conference in 2005 with a 7-27 mark. The 6-1 forward/post averaged a double-double in 2005-06 with 22.3 points and 10.0 rebounds a game. She finished her collegiate career with 2,480 points, 1,316 rebounds and 61 double-doubles, all Big 12 Conference records.
If the former Lady Bears make their respective teams' final rosters, they could face each other numerous times as all three teams compete in the Western Conference. The Silver Stars will take on the Sparks four times (May 25, June 25*, July 3, July 26*) in 2006 and face Sacramento on three occasions (June 2, June 21, Aug. 3*).
All three players will graduate from Baylor in May.
