PALO ALTO, Calif. - Baylor junior Kandace Tucker (Irving, Texas) swept the short sprints, clocking 11.87 in the 100 meters and 23.55 in the 200 meters as the Bears posted seven victories on the final day of competiton at the 32nd Nike Stanford Invitational Saturday at Cobb Track and Angell Field. For the weekend, the Bears scored 13 new regional qualifying marks.
The Bears claimed the top four spots in the 400 meters, with freshman Quentin Iglehart-Summers (San Antonio, Texas) winning with a regional qualifying time of 46.98. Junior Kevin Mutai (Round Rock, Texas) finished second and missed regional qualifying by one-hundredth of a second at 47.27. Freshman R.J. Anderson (Big Pine Key, Fla.) took third in 47.65, while junior Mark Teter (San Antonio, Texas) finished fourth in 48.11.
Senior Angel Perkins (Cerritos, Calif.) ran an outstanding 400 meters, finishing second with a time of 52.64, nearly two seconds below the regional qualifying standard.
Baylor swept all four relays - both the men's 4x100 and 4x400 meters and the women's 4x100 and the 4x400 meters. The men's 4x400-meter relay of junior Reggie Witherspoon (Marietta, Ga.), Anderson, Mutai and Iglehart-Summers won with a time of 3:10.12, while the women's team of sophomore Carla Grace (San Antonio, Texas), Tucker, junior Lauren Tillman (Lawrenceville, Ga.) and Perkins clocked 3:37.59.
Both the men's and women's 4x100-meter relays recorded victories with regional qualifying times. The men's squad of freshman Queito Teasley (Katy, Texas), Witherspoon, senior Jerome Miller (Houston, Texas) and freshman Jacob Norman (Temple, Texas) recorded a time of 40.31. The women's team of senior Marquisha Sefas (Ft. Worth, Texas), junior Kandace Tucker (Irving, Texas), Perkins and sophomore Carla Grace (San Antonio, Texas) lowered their season-best time to 44.79.
Miller won the 110-meter hurdles and lowered his regional qualifying time by three-tenths of a second to 13.72. Witherspoon finished second in the 200 meters with a regional qualifying time of 21.13.
Sophomore Brittany Devereaux (Denton, Texas) came just one inch short of her own school record in the discus with a regional qualifying toss of 50.93 (167-1) to finish fifth.
Sophomore Lauren Hagans (Little Rock, Ark.) finished 10th and got in just below the regional qualifying mark in the 800 meters with a time of 2:09.37. In the men's 800 meters, senior Wil Fitts (DeSoto, Texas) finished fifth and also clocked a time just below the regional qualifying mark at 1:49.99.
Senior Bo Price (Atlanta, Texas) finished fifth with a regional qualifying time of 3:46.52 in the 1,500 meters, while sophomore Mitch Sanders (Katy, Texas) ran 3:52.96.
Junior Ruth Waller (Manchester, England) finished 13th in the 1,500 meters with a regional qualifying time of 4:24.44, while freshman Charity Williams (Corpus Christi, Texas) ran 4:32.61
The Bears return to action at the 79th Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays Wednesday through Saturday at Mike A. Myers Stadium in Austin, Texas.
