The Baylor track and field team will send 16 athletes, seven men and nine women, to compete in eight events, five men's and three women's, at the 2006 NCAA Indoor Championships Friday and Saturday March 10-11 at Tyson Indoor Track Complex in Fayetteville, Ark.
Senior Reggie Witherspoon, the Big 12 Indoor Performer of the Year, will run the 200 meters, freshman Quentin Iglehart-Summers will run in the open 400 meters, freshman Jacob Norman will run in the 60 meters, senior Jerome Miller will compete in the 60-meter hurdles and junior Kandace Tucker will run in the 200 meters.
The Bears have also qualified in the men's and women's 4x400-meter relays as well as the women's distance medley relay.
Norman enters the national championships with the nation's fastest time in the 60 meters at 6.58, a Baylor school record. Witherspoon was the champion in the 200 and 400 meters and ran on the Bears' first-place 4x400-meter relay at the Big 12 Indoor Championships.
Sophomore Lauren Hagans, a key member of the Bears' school-record shattering distance medley relay, will return to action for the first time since fracturing her cheekbone at the Tyson Invitational Feb. 11. The Bears will take a week off after the championships before opening the outdoor season at home with the Dr Pepper Invitational March 25.
MEN
R.J. Anderson: Freshman will serve as the alternate on the 4x400-meter relay. Has a season-best time of 48.17 in the open 400 meters.
Wil Fitts: Senior ran the third leg on the Bears' Big 12 indoor champion 4x400-meter relay and will run on the relay at the national championships. Ran the third leg on both the Bears' indoor and outdoor All-American 4x400-meter relays in 2005 and was the leadoff leg on Baylor's national outdoor champion 4x400-meter relay in 2004. School record holder in the 800 meters indoors.
Quentin Iglehart-Summers: Freshman has the 13th-fastest qualifying time in the 400 meters at 46.70. Finished second to teammate Reggie Witherspoon in the 400 meters at the Big 12 indoor championships. Ran the anchor leg on the Bears' Big 12 indoor champion 4x400-meter relay and should serve the same role at the national championships.
Jerome Miller: Senior has the fifth-fastest qualifying time in the 60-meter hurdles at 7.75. A false start in the prelims of the Big 12 Indoor Championships kept him from placing.
Kevin Mutai: Junior ran the second leg on the Bears' Big 12 indoor champion 4x400-meter relay. Also ran on Baylor's All-American 4x400-meter relay outdoors in 2005. Was the Big 12 champion in the 600 yards this year.
Jacob Norman: Freshman enters the NCAA Indoor Championships with the nation's fastest time in the 60 meters at 6.58. Set the Baylor school record with that time. Also earned All-Big 12 honors in the 200 meters, finishing eighth, after aggravating a groin injury out of the blocks.
Reggie Witherspoon: Junior transfer was named the Big 12 Indoor Performer of the Year and was the High Point Performer after winning the 200 meters, 400 meters and running leadoff on the Bears' winning 4x400-meter relay at the Big 12 Indoor Championships. Tied for the 11th-fastest time in the 200 meters at 21.06.
WOMEN
Erin Bedell: Freshman will anchor the Bears' distance medley relay, which enters the national championships with the nation's fifth-fastest time at 11:07.72. The time shattered the Baylor school record by nearly 20 seconds. Won the Big 12 indoor championship in the 3,000 meters with a time of 9:29.94.
Carla Grace: Sophomore ran the second leg on the Bears' Big 12 indoor champion 4x400-meter relay and the second-place distance medley relay. Will serve as an alternate on the distance medley relay. Ran on the Bears' All-American 4x400-meter relay indoors in 2005. Earned All-Big 12 honors in the 60 meters this year.
Lauren Hagans: Sophomore will run for the first time in four weeks after suffering a fractured cheekbone at the Tyson Invitational Feb. 11. Ran on the Bears' school record distance medley relay, which clocked 11:07.72 and enters with the fifth-fastest qualifying time. Holds the school record in the indoor 1,000 meters at 2:53.05. Little Rock, Ark., native is a cousin of teammate Charity Williams.
Angel Perkins: Senior ran the leadoff leg on the Bears' Big 12 champion 4x400-meter relay and the second leg on the Bears' school-record distance medley relay, which clocked the fifth-fastest qualifying time at 11:07.72. Earned All-Big 12 honors by finishing third in the 400 meters at the Big 12 Indoor Championships and has a season-best 53.67 in the event.
Katrina Taylor: Freshman will serve as the alternate on the Bears' 4x400-meter relay. Has a season-best time of 55.41 in the open 400 meters.
Lauren Tillman: Junior ran the third leg on the Bears' Big 12 indoor champion 4x400-meter relay. Earned All-Big 12 honors by finishing third in the 600 yards.
Kandace Tucker: Has the 12th-fastest qualifying time in the 200 meters with a school record time of 23.51. Earned All-Big 12 honors in the 200 meters by finishing third and in the 60 meters by finishing fifth at the Big 12 Indoor Championships. Ran the anchor leg on the Bears' Big 12 champion 4x400-meter relay.
Ruth Waller: Junior transfer ran leadoff the Bears' second-place distance medley relay at the Big 12 Indoor Championships. Ran the third leg on Baylor's school-record setting distance medley relay, which ran 11:07.72 to qualify with the fifth-fastest time at the national championships.
Charity Williams: Freshman will serve as an alternate on the Bears' distance medley relay. Ran the third leg on the Bears' second-place distance medley relay at the Big 12 Indoor Championships. Earned All-Big 12 honors by finishing fifth at the conference indoor championships. Cousin of sophomore teammate Lauren Hagans.
