WACO, Texas - Baylor women's basketball's Sophia Young and Abiola Wabara have been invited to participate in the WNBA's pre-draft camp in Boston, Mass., April 3-4. The camp, which hosts 40 athletes, will be scouted by representatives from all 14 WNBA teams in preparation for the league's draft to be held on April 5.
Young and Wabara, both slated to graduate from Baylor in May, completed their collegiate careers after guiding the Lady Bear program a 2005 NCAA championship and three straight NCAA Sweet 16 appearances. Young, Baylor basketball's first AP All-American first team selection, became the Big 12 Conference's all-time scoring, rebounding and double-double leader en route to earning league player of the year honors. Young finished her stellar four-year career with 2,480 points, 1,316 rebounds, 61 double-doubles, 315 steals, 303 assists and 131 blocks. The three-time All-Big 12 selection was also named to the league's first-ever all-defensive team and garnered a spot on the Big 12's five-member 10th Anniversary Team.
Wabara, a defensive specialist for the Lady Bears, was named the Big 12's Co-Defensive Player of the Year in 2005-06. In addition to averaging 8.7 points and 5.8 rebounds a game, the 6-0 forward/post registered 40 blocked shots, 44 steals and 55 assists.
Three Baylor players have been drafted by the WNBA. Sheila Lambert was the seventh pick in the 2002 draft by the Charlotte Sting and that same year, Danielle Crockrom was the 11th pick overall (Utah Starzz, now San Antonio Silver Stars). Last season the Seattle Storm took Steffanie Blackmon in the third round.
