WACO, Texas - Some avid Lady Bear basketball fan will soon be driving the most celebrated car in the history of women's athletics at Baylor: the red Corvette that head basketball coach Kim Mulkey-Robertson has driven for almost a year now.
Coach Mulkey-Robertson received a year's use of the Corvette from Allen Samuels Chevrolet upon her team winning the 2005 NCAA Women's Basketball championship. For the past 11-1/2 months she has enjoyed driving her bright red ride.
Now a Baylor fan will be able to share in the excitement, as the Corvette goes up for auction starting this Sunday, March 20.
"We wanted to do something that would involve fans, create excitement, plus benefit the Lady Bears," says Waco new car dealer Bart Cooper. "The easy thing would be simply to sell the car, but we felt it represented a special moment and some special people who had attained a unique achievement. We had to do something memorable."
Cooper worked out an arrangement to sell the car at auction on Ebay with all proceeds over the minimum bid benefiting the Baylor Bear Foundation. The auction will begin at 9:00 a.m. this Sunday and run through Wednesday, March 29, closing at 9:00 p.m. Internet bidders may access the auction site through www.ascwaco1.com.
For interested bidders who are not familiar with Ebay, or who just want information, they may call (254) 230-1743. They will be able to register and make actual bids via telephone without going on the Internet.
The MSRP of the Corvette is $53,580. Book value through the National Auto Dealers Blue Book is $45,000 for retail sale or $41,050 for wholesale. "This means that if we put the Corvette on the lot and advertised it, we should be able to get $45,000 for it," continues Cooper.
"The $41,050 is what we would pay for it from anyone selling it to us. We decided to go even lower on that to help the Baylor Bear Foundation, so we set a base price of $38,790.85. For example, if the car is bought for $48,000, then the Baylor Bear Foundation will reap almost $10,000. This helps continue the legacy of the championship beyond just the year she drove the car."
While the comparison pricing of the Corvette is based upon used cars, the car is technically still a new car. As a demonstrator vehicle, it has never been titled.
