Waco, Texas - The No. 9 Baylor men's tennis came up with an important 5-2 win over No. 33 Kentucky Friday night in Ennis after a three-hour rain delay.
The Wildcats started off with an early lead in doubles play as Baylor's Will Ward and Matt Brown fell to the Kentucky team of Kenny Hodge and Bruno Agostinelli, 8-5, on court three. But the Bears bounced back as Lars Poerschke and Michal Kotka beat Kentucky's Alex Hume and Nate Emge, 8-5.
The Bears then clinched the doubles point on court one when the No. 6 team of Matija Zgaga and Jon Reckewey overpowered Kentucky's Marcus Sundh and Greg Johnstone, 8-5.
In singles, the Bears quickly added to their advantage as Baylor's Will Ward struck down Kentucky's Nate Emge 6-3, 6-0, and No. 53 Michal Kokta defeated Kentucky's Carey Rubin, 7-5, 6-2.The Wildcats fought back when No. 100 Alex Hume upset Baylor's No. 4 Lars Poerschke in a second set tiebreaker 6-3, 7-6.
However, with Matija Zgaga down in the third set, Jon Reckewey sealed a win for the Bears with his 6-4, 6-1 victory over Kentucky's Greg Johnstone. No. 56 Zgaga subsequently fell to No. 63 Bruno Agostinelli in a hard fought match, 7-6, 5-7, 7-5. Matt Brown picked up another point for the Bears with his 6-2,6-4 defeat over Marcus Sundh.
The Bears are on the road for their next match versus California, which takes place this Sunday, Feb. 26 with a new start time of 11:00 a.m.
