WACO, Texas - The Baylor men's track and field 2006 signing class was ranked No. 2 nationally and featured in the December issue of Track & Field News.
"It's an honor that people think that highly of your class," head coach Todd Harbour said. "There are so many opportunities ahead for these guys. David (Gettis) is working out with us now and looking really good. The ladies weren't ranked, but we're just as excited about them."
The 2006 men's class includes sprinters Trey Harts, J.T. Scheuerman, LeJerald Betters and David Gettis and distance runners Ben Haby and Tyler Barnes. All six are currently working out preparing for the 2007 indoor season.
Betters was the state and regional champion in the 400 meters and the triple jump from Waco High School. He finished second in the 400 meters at the Nike Outdoor Junior National Championships. Harts is an accomplished sprinter from A.M. Barbe High School in Lake Charles, La., who captured the NISC national title in the 200 meters indoors. He was also a multiple-time state champion in the 100 meters, 200 meters and the 4x100-meter relay. Scheuerman, from Littleton High School in Littleton, Colo., won the USA Track & Field 400-meter title in 2005.
Haby had an outstanding rookie cross country season, finishing in the Bears top five in every meet, while Barnes redshirted in the fall. Gettis just completed his first season with the Bears football team and joined the track team for workouts in November.
