HOUSTON, Texas - After the second day of action at the Rice Invitational, Iva Mihaylova advanced through the semifinals of the tournament's top draw before bowing out while Jana Bielikova also advanced to the second flight's semifinals before seeing a loss.
Mihaylova defeated Illinois' Leigh Finnegan 7-5, 6-2 in the quarterfinals but fell to Georgia Tech's Amanda Craddock 4-6, 6-3, 6-3. Zuzana Chmelarova was bested by Illinois' Megan Fudge before picking up a consolation win over Prairie View A&M's Marika Dawkins, 6-0, 6-0.
In the Gray Flight, Bielikova earned a 6-3, 6-3 quarterfinal win against Sandra Kukla from UT-San Antonio but was defeated by Georgia Tech's Christy Striplin 7-5, 6-2 in the semifinals. The sophomore Bear fell in a three-set battle to Georgia Tech's Whitney McCray 6-1, 5-7, 6-1.
Mihaylova and Chmelarova were sent from the doubles top flight to consolation after losing to Rice's Julie Chao and Tiffany Lee 8-5. In the consolation rounds, the Bears defeated Jen Shay and Marta Georgiana 8-2 but dropped their final match 8-5 to Georgia Tech's Striplin and Amanda McDowell.
