WACO, Texas -- With the score tied at 1-1, Northwestern's Jeanette Lorme scored in the 57th minute to give the Wildcats the lead as they were able to hold to claim a 2-1 victory over the Baylor soccer team in action at Betty Lou Mays Field. With the loss, Baylor falls to 1-2-1 on the season as Northwestern improves to 3-1 with the win.
"We were just unable to put a complete game together," head coach George Van Linder said. "At times, we were playing well; however, Northwestern was able to take advantage of our mistakes and come away with a win."
The Wildcats grabbed an early lead as Julie Lipinski scored in the seventh minute to give Northwestern a 1-0 advantage. Off a corner kick by Katie Wright, Baylor was unable to clear the ball as Northwestern's Kelly Sitkowski took a shot on goal. Sitkowski's shot deflected off a Baylor defender and rebounded to Lipinski who was able to put the ball into the lower left-hand corner of the net.
Baylor managed to tie the game just 20 minutes later as Tiffany Boshers broke free and was fouled in the penalty box, giving the Bears their first penalty kick of the season. Brittany Zonker shot the ball past Northwestern goalie Whitney Jones to tie the game in the 27th minute.
Neither team managed a goal the rest of the half as the score remained tied heading into the final period. In the second half, Boshers had a shot to give Baylor the lead; however, her one-on-one chance with Jones was pushed just wide of the goal in the 51st minute as the game remained tied.
Lorme then gave Northwestern the lead for good with her goal in the 57th minute as she took a cross off the foot of Kelsey Hans and put it into the upper right hand corner of the net to give the Wildcats a 2-1 lead.
The Wildcats managed to hold on as Jones picked up the victory for Northwestern in the net while making six saves in the contest.
Ashley Holder took the loss for Baylor after making seven saves in 74 minutes of work. Senior Kristin Weegar made one save for Baylor without allowing a goal after subbing for Holder in the 75th minute.
Northwestern held a 20-13 edge in shots as Hans led the way for the Wildcats with eight shots on the afternoon.
Boshers led the Baylor attack with seven shots and three shots on goal.
Baylor will return to action on Friday, Sept. 9, when the Bears travel to Fort Worth, Texas, to take on Northwestern State at 2:00 p.m. at the TCU Invitational.
