The heat was on coach Guy Morriss' Baylor football team Monday as the Bears drilled twice in full pads on the grass practice fields under the hot Central Texas sun. It marked Baylor's ninth and 10th fall workout, its fourth and fifth sessions in full pads.

"The defense got the better of it today in the team sessions," Morriss said. "What I liked was seeing the offense competing a little harder. We didn't execute to the T and had some drops, but we are starting to come out of our funk, I hope."

Morriss also announced following Monday's afternoon workout that three players have left the program for academic reasons. A pair of redshirt freshmen, wide receiver Nate Cook (Allen, Texas) and linebacker Bradley Bullitt (Garland, Texas), along with sophomore offensive guard Michael Trice (Stephenville, Texas), won't be on the squad's 2005 roster. Cook was listed No. 2 at Z receiver and Bullitt was No. 3 at linebacker while Trice was battling for playing time in the trenches.

"We look into it and see what it is going to take to get them back and then try to sit down as a staff and hash it out," Morriss said. "All three have been here and they need to prove to me that they can be students as well as football players (before they can return to the program)."

Junior college transfer Michael Slaughter (Lompoc, Calif.), a defensive end, and junior wide receiver Craig Munn (Waco, Texas) will fill the openings on the camp roster created by Bullitt and Trice's departure.

After a relatively injury-free fall camp, fifth-year senior wide receiver and special team standout Ryan Jeffrey (Lorena, Texas) broke his left hand and fractured a finger on his right hand during Sunday's workout and will likely miss at least the remainder of practice this week, according to team medical officials.

Baylor will return to the practice with a 9:30 a.m. workout on Tuesday before holding its third two-a-day session of fall camp Wednesday with practices slated for 9:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m.

Notes: Morriss indicated that nothing had changed regarding the status of true freshman wide receiver David Gettis (Los Angeles, Calif.), who is still working through issues with the NCAA Clearinghouse ... No. 1 left tackle Travis Farst (Cedar Park, Texas) missed Monday's practices after reinjuring his right knee during Friday's workout ... Redshirt freshman wide receiver Thomas White (Plano, Texas) missed his fifth straight day of practice with a hamstring injury he sustained during Thursday's workout ... Redshirt freshman Justin Osinde (Arlington, Texas) remained sidelined with a knee strain he sustained on the first day of practice ... Both season and single-game tickets for Baylor's five-game home schedule are on sale through the school's Athletic Ticket Office (1-800-BAYLOR-U) ... Baylor's annual Meet the Bears Day is scheduled for Saturday, Aug. 20, at 1 p.m. at Floyd Casey Stadium.
