WACO, Texas - A tribute to Baylor's legendary head track coaches, Jack Patterson (1956-64) and Clyde Hart (1964-present), was unveiled Saturday, April 23, at Hart-Patterson Track & Field Complex. The monument, located at the entrance to the Winston Wolfe Clubhouse, features a bust of each coach and a plaque chronicling their accomplishments.
The project was spearheaded by Patterson's widow, Lois Patterson, and Hart's wife, Maxine, and made possible through the donations of Clyde and Maxine Hart, Ken and Virginia Dunlap, David Alexander, David Sibley, Winston Wolfe, David and Alexis Bennett, Buddy and Virginia Bostick and Ted and Sue Getterman.
Approximately 200 people, including five-time Olympic gold medalist Michael Johnson and several Baylor track and field letterwinners from the past 50 years, were on hand for the short ceremony, which coincided with the Michael Johnson Classic.
A track and field reunion luncheon followed at the "B" Room at Floyd Casey Stadium. The luncheon honored Patterson's 1960, 1962 and 1963 Southwest Conference Championship teams as well as Johnson's induction into the United States Track & Field Association Hall of Fame and Jeremy Wariner and Darold Williamson's gold-medal performances at the 2004 Olympics in Athens, Greece.
Hart's monument lacks a plaque marking the coach's numerous accomplishments. Hart wishes to wait until he has retired to give credit to the achievements of his current teams.
