WACO, Texas - Thousands of Waco and McLennan County citizens lined Waco's Austin Avenue on Monday to pay tribute to the Baylor Lady Bears, 2005 NCAA Women's Basketball National Champions.
Each player rode in a Corvette convertible along the city street and threw candy and miniature basketballs to fans. In addition, coaches and support staff were honored along the parade route as well. The parade concluded at Heritage Square where each individual was escorted from their car and presented a floral bouquet by a tuxedo clad Larry Groth, Waco's City Manager.
A short program, led by Mr. Groth, followed the parade. Robin McDurham, mayor of the city of Waco, read a proclamation that proclaimed April 18, 2005 as "Baylor University Lady Bears 2005 NCAA Women's Basketball National Championship Day". In addition, Judge Jim Lewis read a proclamation from the McLennan County Commissioners Court congratulating and recognizing the Lady Bears on their national championship. Baylor President Robert B. Sloan Jr., Athletics Director Ian McCaw and Baylor head coach Kim Mulkey-Robertson also addressed the crowd.
Each member of the Lady Bear travel party which included coaches, players, managers, trainers, strength and conditioning and media relations personnel received copies of both proclamations.
