WACO, Texas - The Baylor track and field team won 13 events to open the season strong as the Bears hosted the Baylor Dr Pepper Invitational Saturday at Hart-Patterson Track & Field Complex.
Even with senior Olympic gold medalist Darold Williamson (San Antonio, Texas) not running the 400 meters, Baylor still recorded a 1-2-3 finish in the event. Sophomore Kevin Mutai (Round Rock, Texas) took first in 46.95, while sophomore Mark Teter (San Antonio, Texas) finished second in 47.06 and junior Wil Fitts (DeSoto, Texas) finished third in 47.40. Junior Angel Perkins (Cerritos, Calif.) won the 400 title on the women's side, running a 53.85.
The Bears also swept the 4x440-yard relays with Teter, Mutai, Fitts and Williamson cruising to a 3:09.51, a regional qualifying mark, and a two-second victory over an exhibition squad, which included former Bear and two-time Olympic gold medalist Jeremy Wariner. The women's team of freshman Carla Grace (San Antonio, Texas), seniors Lakadron Ivery (Tyler, Texas) and Danielle Myricks (Willingboro, N.J.) and Perkins ran a regional qualifying mark of 3:40.11, just ahead of another exhibition team that featured Olympian Sanya Richards.
Baylor also swept the 3,000 meters with junior Bo Price (Atlanta, Texas) winning in 8:38.93. Freshman Jacob Jones (Willis, Texas) finished fourth in 8:56.52. Sophomore Brittany McGuire (Humble, Texas) won on the women's side in 10:06.04, while freshman Alissa McKaig (New Haven, Ind.) took third in 10:31.29.
Myricks won the 400-meter hurdles with a regional qualifying mark of 60.35, while sophomore Lauren Tillman (Lawrenceville, Ga.) finished third in 62.83. Freshman Lauren Hagans (Little Rock, Ark.) won the 800 meters in 2:11.41, while junior Shanta Bibbs (San Antonio, Texas) finished fifth in 2:19.42.
Ivery took the 100-meter title in 11.31, and junior Marquisha Sefas (Fort Worth, Texas) finished fourth in 11.84. The women's 4x100-meter relay of Grace, Sefas, senior Elizabeth Wilson (Duncanville, Texas) and Ivery won with a time of 45.50.
The Bears swept the 3,000-meter steeplechase as sophomore Monique Ortega (El Paso, Texas) won in 10:40.00 and freshman Lyndsy Bedell (Plano, Texas) took second in 11:07.00. Junior Rob Morrow (Grapevine, Texas) also took first on the men's side in 9:35.57.
Junior Jerome Miller (Houston, Texas) and freshman Jeremy Jackson (Round Rock, Texas) took second and third in 13.95 and 14.51, respectively, in the 110-meter hurdles. Junior Janelle Mulkey (San Antonio, Texas) finished second in the 100-meter hurdles in 14.22. Sophomore Mitch Sanders (Katy, Texas) and Price finished second and third in the 1,500 meters with times of 3:58.82 and 4:01.14, respectively. Freshman Jessi Barnes (Bentonville, Ark.) took fourth in the 1,500 meters in 4:56.29.
In the field events, freshman Brittany Devereaux (Denton, Texas) won the discus with a mark of 148-04. Senior April Holliness (Duncanville, Texas) claimed the long jump title with a mark of 19-7.
Junior Chris Gillis (Pennsauken, N.J.) finished second in the long jump with a leap of 24-4.25. Sophomore Austin Heape (Dallas, Texas) placed fourth in the shot put with a toss of 47-4.5, and sophomore Chris Cardwell (Abilene, Texas) finished fourth and broke his own school record in the hammer at 149-2.
The Bears return to action at the UTA Invitational April 2 in Arlington, Texas.
