Baylor junior punter Daniel Sepulveda earned second-team All-America honors from The Associated Press, the media organization announced Tuesday. He becomes the third player in school history, joining halfback Ronnie Bull in 1961 and quarterback Don Trull in 1963, to earn both academic and athletic All-America honors in the same year.
Only the sixth two-time All-American in school history and the first since free safety Thomas Everett in 1985 and 1986, Sepulveda currently leads the Big 12 Conference and ranks second nationally in punting average at 46.18 yards per punt. That figure also ranks as the second-highest single-season average in Baylor history, just ahead of his 46.0 mark of a year ago. Sepulveda, who became the first sophomore to win the Ray Guy Award as the nation's top punter and earned third-team AP All-America honors as a sophomore in 2004, boasts a 44.85 career average, which ranks first all-time at Baylor and sixth in NCAA history for players with between 150 and 249 punts.
A native of Dallas, Texas, Sepulveda earned first-team ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America honors earlier this month with his 3.51 cumulative grade point average in accounting. He holds Baylor career records for punts of 50-plus yards (66) and punts of 60-plus yards (13).
In addition to the 2005 AP All-America honor, he also has earned second-team All-America recognition from both The Sporting News and Rivals.com, third-team All-America status from collegefootballnews.com and honorable-mention from Sports Illustrated.
Sepulveda captured 2005 first-team All-Big 12 honors from The Associated Press, ESPN.com, The Dallas Morning-News, Austin American-Statesman and San Antonio Express-News, while garnering second-team All-Big 12 status from the league's coaches, Kansas City Star, Houston Chronicle, Forth Worth Star-Telegram and Waco Tribune-Herald. Sepulveda was also named to the Express-News' Big 12 All-Decade second-team honor squad and earned first-team Academic All-Big 12 honors for the third consecutive season.
Baylor finished the 2005 season 5-6 overall and 2-6 in Big 12 play, the Bears' most successful season since 1995. During the 2005 campaign, Baylor snapped a 24-game road losing streak, won its first Big 12 road game and posted multiple Big 12 wins in the same season for the first time ever.
