WACO, Texas - Sophia Young was named Big 12 Women's Basketball Player of the Week by a media voting panel in the league's first selections of the 2005-06 season. In addition, Oklahoma freshman Courtney Paris was chosen Big 12 Rookie of the Week.

The award was Young's eighth career Big 12 honor, fifth as player of the week. Earlier this season she was named by the coaches as the Big 12 Preseason Player of the Year, is a consensus All-American and is on the Wade Trophy and Wooden Award watch lists.

Young, a 6-1 senior forward, averaged 25.0 points, 13.0 rebounds and 3.0 assists in Baylor's three wins over Georgia, UCLA and Indiana. She is shooting .600 (33-55) from the floor and has also registered four blocks and three steals. In addition, Young has recorded two double-doubles and missed a third by one rebound. She now has 46 career double-doubles, just eight shy of Angie Welle's (Iowa State) Big 12 record of 54. Young hauled down her 1,000th career rebound against Georgia and currently has 1,026 to move into the No. 2 spot on the Baylor career charts and No. 5 on the Big 12 career list.

Young leads a 3-0 Lady Bear squad that is riding a 23-game win streak, the longest active NCAA Division I victory string.
