COLLEGE STATION, Texas - Baylor's Matija Zgaga and Jon Reckewey claimed the doubles crown in the Wilson/ITA South Central Regional Tournament in College, Station, Texas, on Sunday. The win gave Baylor its second straight regional doubles championship as Zgaga teamed with Lars Poerschke to win in 2004.
The Zgaga/Reckewey tandem, both juniors, defeated Texas' Travis Helgeson and Michael Venus 8-6 to claim the victory. They have now secures a spot in the 32-team field at the ITA National Indoor Championships in Columbus, Ohio.
Vladimir Portnov and Matt Brown, playing in the USTA Pro Futures of Waco, both advanced to the qualifying round with second-round wins on Sunday at the Baylor Tennis Center. Portnov defeated former UCLA standout Chris Lam 6-2, 6-3 and Brown, a BU freshman, eliminated Hungarian Geza Bazula 6-1, 7-5. Poerschke bowed out of the tournament with a three-set loss to Denis Zivkovic (USA), 6-4, 2-6, 6-4.
