COLLEGE STATION, Texas - The ITA Southwest Regional tournament finished doubles round of 32 and singles round of 64 action this afternoon at Texas A&M's George P. Mitchell Tennis Center. Of Baylor's three doubles team, all pairs have advanced to the round of 16 while all seven singles players advanced to the round of 32.
In doubles eighth-seeded Zuzana Cerna and Klara Zrustova defeated Houston's Kami Miller and Vicky Simpson 8-0 while the third-seeded duo of Daniela Covello and Carolin Walter won 8-2 over Silke Buksik and Marine DeBourquerey from UT-Pan American. The final doubles match was won by 16th-seeded Zuzana Krchnakova and Iva Mihaylova 8-4 over Katherine Palider and Teri Wilkerson from UT-El Paso.
The singles main draw was equally as successful for Baylor's players. The tournament's top-seed Zuzana Zemenova defeated Nathalie Wallin of UT-San Antonio 3-6, 6-2, 6-1. Covello, thirteenth seed, defeated Karen Scida from UTSA 6-2, 6-0. Krchnakova beat Tulane's Erika Valdes 2-6, 6-4, 7-5 while Cerna, the twelfth seed, defeated Rice's Christine Dao 6-4, 6-2. The fourth-seeded Walter won against Hedvig Lofdahl from Tulane 6-3, 6-2, and Mihaylova also chalked up a win over Sam Houston State's Lata Assudani 6-3, 6-1. Finally, tenth-seeded Zrustova finished the day for Baylor by defeating Clemence Remy from ULL 6-1, 6-2.
Doubles action continues tomorrow at 3:30 p.m. while singles kicks off the day at 8:30 a.m.
