WACO, Texas - Baylor junior middle blocker Desiree Guilliard-Young (Berkeley, Calif.) hit .414 with a season-high 18 kills and 11 blocks for her second career double-double to lead the Bears to a 3-1 (31-29, 30-26, 27-30, 30-20) victory over Kansas in Big 12 volleyball action Saturday night at the Ferrell Center.
Junior outside hitter Nicole LeBlanc (Tampa, Fla.) recorded her fourth straight double-double with 12 kills and 16 digs for the Bears (12-10, 4-7 Big 12). Senior middle blocker Stella Odion (Houston, Texas) hit .391 and added 11 kills and five blocks (two solo), while senior outside hitter Kelly Spriggs (Houston, Texas) had 10 kills and five blocks.
Senior outside hitter Melanie Hamerly (Orange, Texas) added nine kills and four blocks, while senior setter Emily Huston (Santa Rosa, Calif.) had five kills, 46 assists, 10 digs and five blocks for her team-leading 11th double-double of the season. Huston also had three service aces to tie Heather Williams for second on Baylor's all-time list with 168. Sophomore libero Kristen Schramek (San Antonio, Texas) tied LeBlanc with a match-high 16 digs, while sophomore defensive specialist Heather Marcus (Grand Prairie, Texas) added seven digs and three aces.
Josi Lima led Kansas (12-8, 4-7) with 16 kills, 11 digs and seven blocks, while Emily Brown had a double-double with 13 kills and 11 digs. Megan Hill also added 13 kills, while Paula Caten had a double-double with 12 kills and 10 digs. Jamie Mathewson led the Jayhawks defensively with 16 digs.
Baylor held a slim 10-9 lead in game one before scoring four straight to go up 14-9. The Bears pushed the lead to 20-13, but Kansas stormed back to within one at 20-19. The Jayhawks took the lead at 22-21, then went ahead 28-26. The Bears scored three points in a row to go ahead 29-28, then after a Kansas sideout closed out the game with the last two points, a kill by Huston, followed by an ace by the senior setter to win the game, 31-29. The Bears hit .262 in the game and got eight kills from Guilliard-Young, while Kansas hit .250.
The Bears scored the first three points of game two and never looked back. A four-point run gave Baylor its largest lead of the game at 19-11. Baylor hit .303 for the game, while Kansas hit .243 and the Bears took a 2-0 lead into the break with a 30-26 decision.
Kansas jumped out ahead 14-9 in game three and held their largest lead at 23-16. The Bears rallied back by scoring four straight and got to within two at 27-25 and 28-26, but the Jayhawks were able to sideout the rest of the way and take the game, 30-27.
Game four was all Baylor as the Bears got off to a fast start with an 8-3 lead. The Bears scored five straight to push the lead to 16-6 and later took their largest lead at 24-12. Kansas scored four straight at match point to get to 20, but the Bears closed out the match on a kill by Hamerly, 30-20. The Bears hit .414 for the game, while the Jayhawks hit only .184.
Baylor outhit Kansas, .285-.229, and had more digs, 64-58. The Bears also outblocked the Jayhawks, 18.0-10.0, and outaced them, 9-4. Kansas also committed 15 service errors, while Baylor only had eight.
The Bears return to action when they travel to face Texas A&M-Corpus Christi in non-conference play Monday at 7 p.m. in Corpus Christi, Texas.
