WACO, Texas - The Baylor Lady Bear basketball team continues to climb up the Associated Press' national poll and is listed at No. 2 in the poll released today. The No. 2 listing is Baylor's highest-ever ranking in a women's basketball poll. The team had been ranked No. 3 last week.
Baylor began the 2004-05 season at No. 8 in the poll and had never slipped below No. 9. The Lady Bears, currently sporting a 12-1 record, have won 12 straight contest after dropping their season opener to LSU, 71-70.
Baylor acheived another milestone by receiving 12 first-place votes. It is the first time the Lady Bears have received a first-place vote in the history of the poll. Duke, 15-1 on the season, took over the No. 1 spot after LSU lost its first game of the season, a 51-49 squeaker to then-14th-ranked Rutgers. Baylor received 1,063 points in the Jan. 10 poll, just 30 points behind the Duke while LSU slipped to third in the poll.
Baylor continues Big 12 Conference play on Wed., Jan. 12 when they travel to Lincoln, Neb., to take on the Nebraska Cornhuskers at 7:05 p.m.
