BAYLOR SOCCER TRAVELS TO IOWA STATE AND KANSAS

WACO, Texas-The Baylor soccer team (4-4-1, 1-1-0) continues conference play when the Bears travel to Ames, Iowa, to face Iowa State (3-7-0, 0-2-0) on Friday, Oct. 1, at 7:00 p.m. before travelling to Lawrence, Kan., to face No. 11 Kansas (9-2-0, 1-1-0) on Sunday, Oct. 3, at 1:00 p.m.

"This will be our first road contests during the conference season," head coach George Van Linder said. "We will have to continue our solid play if we hope to gain some points in the standings."

Baylor enters the contest with the Cyclones owning a 6-2-1 edge in the series. Iowa State; however, has won two of the last three in the series after the teams played to a 1-1 tie last year. Iowa State is led by Erin Witte, who leads the team in goals (2), assists (2) and points (6).

Iowa State has lost its last two contests, opening up the conference season with setbacks against Colorado and Nebraska.

Following the contest with the Cyclones, the Bears travel to Lawrence, Kan., to meet nationally-ranked Kansas. The Jayhawks split their opening conference games, falling to Nebraska before defeating Colorado at home. Kansas is led by returning All-American Caroline Smith. Smith is tied for the team lead with nine points on the season and has scored three goals and three assists on the year. So far this season, the Jayhawks defense has been tough, allowing only four goals on the year.

Last season, Baylor played the Jayhawks tight, before falling to Kansas 1-0 in double overtime. Baylor still owns an edge in the series with a 5-2-1 career record against the Jayhawks.

LAST TIME OUT - GOLDEN GOAL LIFTS BAYLOR OVER TEXAS

WACO, Texas-Anna Schuch's goal 18 seconds into overtime lifted the Baylor soccer team to a 2-1 victory over No. 22 Texas in action at Betty Lou Mays Field. The win was Baylor's first victory in the series since 1999 as the Bears improved to 4-4-1 on the season, 1-1 in the Big 12 Conference.

"I am so proud of this team right now," head coach George Van Linder said. "We made the most of our chances and were able to come away with a great win."

Texas jumped out to an early 1-0 lead on the Bears with a goal in the eighth minute. Kristen Teter took a pass from Caitlin Kennedy and blasted the ball into the back of the net to give the Longhorns the lead.

Baylor managed to respond just seven minutes later; however, as Tiffany Boshers corralled a loose ball off a shot from Jennifer Martin and scored from the top of the box to tie the game.

The score remained the same the rest of regulation, as neither team could find the back of the net. Baylor's best scoring chance the remainder of regulation came in the 60th minute; however, Schuch's shot sailed just over the crossbar as the game remained tied.

Schuch made the most of her next opportunity 18 seconds into overtime as she struck a looping shot from 20 yards out over the Texas goalie and into the back of the net to give Baylor its first victory over the Longhorns since a 2-0 win at the Big 12 Conference Tournament in 1999.

Ashley Holder had her second consecutive solid game in the net for the Bears, recording nine saves in the win. Dana Hall took the loss for the Longhorns as Texas fell to 5-4-1, 1-2 in the Big 12 Conference. In the contest, Texas out-shot the Bears 22-11 as each team had three corner kicks during the game.

Anna Schuch LEADING THE WAY

Transfer sophomore forward Anna Schuch has made an immediate impact in her first few games as a Bear. The transfer from Saint Louis currently leads the team lead in goals (4) and assists(4) and leads the team in points (12). She is among the leaders in the conference in two categories as she ranks fourth in assists and eighth in points. Schuch also ranks seventh in the conference in points per game.

The sophomore had her best game as a Bear in the win over TCU. In the 5-2 victory over the Horned Frogs, Schuch scored a goal an added two assists as Baylor improved to 2-2-1 on the season. Schuch also scored the game-winning goal against Texas, a shot from 15 yards out 18 seconds into overtime.

NEWCOMERS PROVIDING A SPARK

The 2004 season has seen newcomers play a prominent roll in the success of the Baylor soccer team. So far this year, six players new to the Baylor soccer team have seen action in every game, including five who have started in each contest. Baylor's top two goal scorers on the season are new to the Bears, as Anna Schuch leads the way with four goals on the season as freshman Margaret Kaderli is second on the team with three. Transfer Jennifer Martin has also had an impact on the offensive side of the ball as the junior is tied for second on the team with two assists.

Newcomers have had a tremendous impact on the defensive side of the ball as well. Baylor freshman Ashley Holder has started in goal every game for the Bears, establishing a school record with 15 saves in a single-game with her performance against Notre Dame. In addition, freshman Megan Sherrell has started every game for Baylor at the defender position.

Ashley Holder EARNS NATIONAL HONOR

Following a weekend that saw her make twenty saves against a pair of nationally-ranked opponents, goalkeeper Ashley Holder was named to the Soccer Buzz National Elite Team of the Week the website announced. Holder, who also earned Big 12 Defensive Player of the Week honors, made 12 saves in a 1-0 loss to Texas A&M before making eight stops in a 2-1 Baylor win over No. 22 Texas.

The selection marks only the second time in school history a Baylor player has been named to the website's national elite team. Former Baylor player Ryan Lee was the first Bear to be selected to the national elite team of the week, earning the honor the week of Oct. 21, 2001.

The Bears return home for a pair of key Big 12 Conference contests. On Friday, Oct. 8, Baylor plays host to Oklahoma at 7:00 p.m. before meeting Oklahoma State at 1:00 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 10.
