WACO, Texas -- Anna Schuch's first goal as a Baylor soccer player was a memorable one as her blast with seven minutes remaining was the game-winner as the Bears defeated Iowa 2-1 in action at the Nike Tiger Invitational. With the win, Baylor improves to 1-1-1 on the year as the Hawkeyes fall to 0-1 on the season.
"It's a great feeling for us to get the first win of the season," head coach George Van Linder said. "We made improvements in several areas and we look forward to playing a good Wisconsin team."
Baylor opened up an early 1-0 lead on the Hawkeyes, as sophomore Missy McConnell knocked in a shot off a pass from Katie Chicoine in the 41st minute.
The lead would stand for most of the way; but, Iowa was able to tie the game with only eight minutes remaining. After a Baylor foul, Iowa's Kitty Montgomery headed in a shot off a free kick from Kim Lewis to tie the game late.
It did not take long for Baylor to respond, however, as the Bears scored only 56 seconds later. Ginny Rosario-Tull crossed a ball from the right side over to Schuch, who shot it into the net to give the Bears a 2-1 lead.
Iowa did not have another good scoring the chance the rest of the way, as Baylor went on to a 2-1 victory.
Despite only winning by one goal, the Bears controlled the match throughout. The Bears owned a 20-6 edge on shots for the game, including a 13-2 edge in the second half. In addition, Baylor owned a 9-0 advantage in corner kicks.
Iowa's Brittany Vogele recorded 13 saves in the game, however, took the loss for the Hawkeyes. Freshman goalie Ashley Holder picked up the victory for the Bears.
Baylor will look to push its win streak to two when the Bears face Wisconsin in the conclusion of the Nike Tiger Invitational on Sunday, Sept. 5, at 11:00 a.m.
