WACO, Texas - The Baylor track and field team has signed Brittany Devereaux and Jerome Miller to national letters of intent, head coach Clyde Hart announced Friday. Devereaux and Miller will join the Bears for the 2004-05 academic year.
Devereaux was a standout discus thrower and shot putter at Ryan High School in Denton, Texas. Devereaux was the district and regional shot put and discus champion as a junior and senior. She finished third at the state meet in 2003 and second this year. Devereaux was the salutatorian of her class as well as a member of the National Honor Society and the National Spanish Honor Society.
"We have a good nucleus of our women's team returning next year," Hart said. "Brittany will give us a performer in some events in which we have not been strong recently, but we think she can come in and bolster the team in those areas."
The 6'2" Miller was a two-sport standout in football and track at Alief Hastings High School in Houston. Miller is transferring from Bakersfield Junior College, where he was the state champion in the 110-meter hurdles with a time of 13.86 and second in the 400-meter hurdles at 51.90.
"We are delighted to have Jerome," Hart said. "We have not had a high hurdler in a while, but he definitely fits the bill. We believe he can provide immediate help and also develop into a good intermediate hurdler."
The Bears have now signed 12 student-athletes for next year.
