WACO, Texas - Baylor's Benjamin Becker, the newly-crowned NCAA Tennis singles champion, added another honor to his already impressive list for the 2004 season. He was recently named 2004 Academic All-District VI At-Large Second Team, by the district's members of College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).
To qualify, an individual needs to be nominated by a school's sports information office and have a 3.20 GPA while either serving as a starter or as a significant reserve. The student-athlete must also be at least a sophomore in eligibility and have completed at least one year at the institution.
Becker, a junior finance major, in addition to winning the NCAA singles championship, helped lead the Baylor men's tennis team if the school's first-ever NCAA team national championship and No. 1 Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) ranking. In addition, in Becker's three seasons at Baylor, the Bears have claimed three straight Big 12 regular season and tournament titles. The two-time all-American finished the 2003-04 season with a record of 44-9 in singles, including a 24-6 mark against ranked opponents, and was 29-7 in doubles. He is ranked No. 9 in the final ITA singles rankings and, teamed with Matias Marin, is ranked No. 30 in doubles. Becker is also a three-time all-Big 12 selection and two-time Academic All-Big 12 honoree.
