WACO, Texas - Benjamin Becker advanced to the round of 16 in singles in the NCAA Men's Tennis Championsips in Tulsa, Okla., and the doubles tandem of Benedikt Dorsch and Matija Zgaga advanced to the round of 16 in the doubles portion of the tournament as well.
Becker, ranked No. 15, defeated 18th-ranked Adrians Zguns of Arkansas in straight sets in the round of 32, 6-2, 6-4, to move on to the next round. He will take on the tournament's third-seeded and third-ranked Jeremy Wurtzman of Ohio State on Friday at 10 a.m. This will be the first meeting between Wurtzman and Becker. The Bears played Ohio State in the team competition but Benedikt Dorsch played Wurtzman at No. 1. Dorsch posted a 6-3, 6-4 win over Wurtzman.
Dorsch and freshman Matija Zgaga, ranked 20th nationally, advanced by defeating 21st-ranked Nick Meythaler and Rylan Rizza of Virginia, 6-3, 6-2. They will play the tournament's top-seeded duo of Richard and William Barker of Rice on Friday at 12 p.m. The two teams faced off against each other in the team portion of the NCAA Championships. The Baylor duo led 6-3 at one time but by the time play was suspended, the twins from Rice had taken a 7-6 advantage.
Becker and senior Matias Marin saw their 17-match win streak come to an end when Zolton Csandi and Izak van der Merwe of Old Dominion beat them 6-3, 6-3. The Old Dominion duo is ranked No. 15 while Becker and Marin are No. 22. Becker and Marin end their season with a 23-3 record.
