ARLINGTON, Texas - Baylor junior Lakadron Ivery highlighted the Bears' showing Saturday by winning three events then leading two relays to victory at the Arlington Invitational hosted by UTA at Maverick Stadium.
Ivery, who was named Big 12 Track Athlete of the Week last week edged out teammate junior April Holliness in the long jump with a mark of 6.27 meters (20-7 ?). Holliness, an indoor All-American in the event, posted a leap of 6.25 (20-6 ?) and also finished second in the triple jump with a leap of 12.16 meters (39-10 ?). Ivery also won the 100 meters by breaking her own school-record in 11.27, then won the 200 meters with a time of 23.43. Ivery wasn't finished as she anchored the 4x100 relay squad to a first-place showing with a time of 44.94 and the 4x400 at 3:37.86.
Junior Danielle Myricks (58.77) and freshman Lauren Tillman (63.21) finished 1-2 in the 400-meter hurdles, while sophomore Janelle Mulkey finished second in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 14.10. The Bears finished 3-4-5 in the 400 meters, with freshman Rena Napolean (55.24), sophomore Mary Pearce (56.57) and sophomore Shanta Bibbs (57.26).
Junior Elizabeth Wilson finished fourth behind Ivery in the 100 at 11.81, while sophomore Marquisha Sefas finished 6th at 11.91. Sefas finished fifth in the 200 meters at 24.43, while Wilson placed sixth in 24.51. Sophomore Angela Marvin (10:21.47) finished third in the 3,000 meters, while freshman Brittany McGuire (10:33.79) placed fifth.
Sophomore Mercy Wagner took third in the pole vault with a mark of 3.15 meters (10-4).
On the men's side, junior Chris Gillis won the long jump with a mark of 7.37 meters (24-2 ?), while freshman Dominique Zeigler took third in the high jump with a leap of 2.00 meters (6-6 ?).
Freshman Jason Baker won the 1,500 meters with a time of 1:57.06, and sophomore Jamen Saziru took the 200 meters in 20.89. In the 100 meters, Saziru (10.58) and freshman Braelon Davis (10.59) finished 4-5, and the 4x100-meter relay team finished second at 40.93.
The Bears took three of the top five spots in the 400 meters, with freshman Mark Teter (47.21) taking second, senior Joel Martin (48.17) taking fourth and freshman Kevin Mutai (48.37) finishing fifth.
The 4x400-meter relay squad of Saziru, Martin, sophomore Jeremy Wariner and junior Darold Williamson easily won the event with a time of 3:06.91, nearly five seconds ahead of second-place North Texas.
At the Stanford Invitational Friday and Saturday, sophomore Will Fitts ran an outstanding time of 1:48.25 to finish fourth and post an NCAA regional qualifying mark. Senior Kyle King clocked a time of 14:00.94 to finish 15th out of 128 competitors in the 5,000 meters. Freshman Bo Price ran a time of 3:50.85 in the 1,500 meters.
On the women's side, junior Jessa Chance finished sixth in the 3,000-meter steeplechase with a time of 10:31.38, while freshman Monique Ortega ran a time of 4:36.99 in the 1,500.
The Bears return to action next week at the Texas Relays Wednesday through Saturday in Austin, Texas.
