Second Round Quotes
Baylor
Baylor Coach Kim Mulkey-Robertson
Opening statement
"That was a very important win for our kids. As excited as we are you never like to see a kid get hurt and my thoughts and prayers are with Stephanie (Blackmon) right now. She hit some big, clutch baskets, she's just played very well in Big 12 play and I know if she can play she'll be out there."
On the play of Emily Niemann...
"She didn't score any points, but she might have been the most valuable player on the floor because they (Texas Tech) couldn't double down. That's why she didn't get any points. She spread the defense and she makes you respect her out there and allows Stephanie, Sophia and Dionne to take one-on-one moves down there, so she was very valuable to us."
Sophomore, Forward, Sophia Young
On the play of LaToya Davis...
"Davis is a real good defensive player, she's a real good player and I tried my best to keep her off the rebounding, because that's what she did against us the last time we played them. We were just going at it and we had fun out there."
On Baylor's game plan...
"Because we have such a good post game, I think that is always the game plan, to get it inside and to kick it back out to the guards. They were sagging off the guards a lot so when we kicked it back out they were knocking down shots."
On playing with Stephanie Blackmon...
"I think Stephanie is a big-time player, and we've been playing together for a year and a half. We always work together in practices and we just seem to find each other down the floor and I think we've developed, and we like playing with each other."
On Emily Niemann...
"Emily is a great player and she's a great 3-point shooter, and whenever she's on, she's on and that is big time for us. Our plan was to get it inside as much as possible, so we did whatever we had to do."
Senior, Guard, Dionne Brown
On getting nervous when Texas Tech started closing the point deficit...
"Every Big 12 team in this league will not go away. We knew we'd been playing good through the course of the game but it wasn't over until the buzzer sounded. So it was nerve racking but it wasn't surprising to see they were fighting back."
Texas Tech
Head Coach Marsha Sharp
Opening statement
"We are disappointed that we didn't get to advance to the next round. I was really impressed with Baylor and how they played. Sophia Young was great in the middle. We just didn't have an answer for her. I was also proud of our players. LaToya Davis did an excellent job keeping us in the game and Alesha Robertson hit some shots late in the game. The good news for us is that we're going to play another day and compete in the NCAA tournament. Baylor deserved to win tonight, we didn't quite have any answers for them."
On Jolee Ayers-Curry's foul trouble...
"Well, certainly we need her on the floor. I thought that we could have survived it if we maybe given a little more help, and done a little bit better job of picking and choosing on the perimeter. We got a little bit away from our game plan; I think we panicked just a little bit. That was more the difference than Jolee. Certainly LaToya was tempted to defend both of them at times (Young and Blackmon), one trip one, one trip the other. It made a difference because of size, but I still think we just didn't do a good job of making choices today.
Sophomore forward LaToya Davis
On Sophia Young...
"I think Sophia is a great player. You just have to try and slow her down, but it's hard to stop her. Baylor's inside game has always been great."
On missing Cisti Greenwalt...
"Cisti is great player, but when one person goes down, someone else has to step up. We definitely missed her though."
Freshman guard Alesha Robertson
On her first tournament appearance...
"I have learned a lot coming to the tournament. Hopefully this experience will help me in the future."
On her second half offense...
"I guess I was just finding more open shots, taking it off the dribble a lot more, trying to get into a run where we could come back."
