NAMPA, Idaho - Baylor sophomore Jeremy Wariner came out on top as the top five 400-meter sprinters in the country went head-to-head at the United Heritage Classic hosted by Boise State Saturday at the Idaho Sports Center. Wariner also led the Bears' third-ranked 4x400 relay squad to another victory as well.
Wariner, who has the third-fastest time in the nation so far this season, clocked a time of 46.23 to win the 400, outrunning top-ranked Arizona State's top-ranked duo of Jason Barton and Lewis Blanda (46.70), who finished ninth and second, respectively. The other pair in the top five was Wariner's fourth-ranked teammate, junior Darold Williamson, who had a disappointing 25th-place finish at 49.67 and LSU's Pete Coley, who finished eighth.
The 4x400 team of freshman Mark Teter, Wariner, sophomore Jamen Saziru and Williamson clocked a time of 3:07.98 to edge top-ranked LSU and fourth-ranked Arizona State.
Sophomore Will Fitts also came out victorious in the 800 meters with a time of 1:51.79, just two-hundredths of a second faster than LSU's Jeffery Fisher, while junior Korey Wright took sixth. Saziru finished sixth in the 200 meters with a time of 21.38, while freshman Dominique Zeigler finished eighth in both the high jump (6-4 ?) and the long jump (22-10 ?).
On the women's side, junior Lakadron Ivery broke her own school record in the 60 meters with a time of 7.36, just one-hundreth of a second faster than her previous time, and junior Elizabeth Wilson took third at 7.52. Junior April Holliness took home a share of the long jump title falling just short of her own school record by tying UCLA's Renee Williams with a leap of 20-6 ?, while Ivery finished third with a mark of 19-7 ?. Ivery also finished fifth in the 200 meters at 23.98.
The Bears took three of the top eight spots in the 400 as freshmen Rena Napolean (56.21) and Lauren Tillman (56.50) finished third and fifth, respectively, and junior Danielle Myricks (56.71) tied for sixth.
Senior Jordan Willmann, who is ranked second in the nation in the pentathlon, finished ninth in the long jump (17-3 ?), 12th in the 60-meter hurdles (8.98) and seventh in the 800 (2:16.30).
Assistant coach Stacey Smith, the U.S. record holder in the triple jump, also competed on Saturday and finished third with a mark of 42-4 1/4.
The Bears return to action as they split up for the Iowa State Classic in Ames, Iowa, and the Razorback Invitational in Fayetteville, Ark., Friday and Saturday, Feb. 13 and 14.
