Track Team Shines at Iowa State, Arkansas

AMES, Iowa/FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. - The Baylor track team ran two successful meets as it split up to compete in the Iowa State Classic at Lied Rec Center and the Razorback Invitational at Randal Tyson Track Complex Saturday.

At Iowa State, junior Darold Williamson broke the meet record in the 400 meters with an NCAA automatic qualifying time of 45.79. Sophomore Jeremy Wariner, who already has an automatic qualifying time this season, finished fourth at 46.46, while freshman Mark Teter finished 21st at 47.92.

The top-ranked 4x400 relay team of Williamson, Wariner, Teter and freshman Kevin Mutai also set a new meet record with an NCAA automatic qualifying time of 3:05.27, the squad's fastest time of the season.

Mutai was edged out in the 600 yards, finishing second with a time of 1:10.17, just behind the winner, Iowa State's Ryan Boyington, at 1:10.04. Sophomore Will Fitts finished sixth in the 800 meters with an NCAA provisional qualifying time of 1:49.73.

On the women's side, junior Lakadron Ivery broke her own school record in the 60 meters for the second straight week by winning the even with an NCAA provisional qualifying mark of 7.34. Junior Elizabeth Wilson (7.63) finished 10th, while sophomore Marquisha Sefas (7.75) placed 15th.

The 4x400 relay team claimed victory by more than five seconds by posting an NCAA provisional qualifying time of 3:37.87. Sophomore Janelle Mulkey finished sixth in the 60-meter hurdles by clocking 8.59.

In the 400 meters, freshman Rena Napolean finished sixth at 55.20, while junior Danielle Myricks came in ninth at 55.88. Sophomore Mary Pearce (1:23.63) finished sixth in the 600 yards, while freshman Lauren Tillman (1:24.13) finished ninth and junior Lindsey Ramey (1:25.24) placed 12th.

At Arkansas, senior Kyle King won the 5,000 meters and broke his own school record with an NCAA provisional qualifying time of 13:56.83. King's time is the second-fastest in the country so far this season. Freshman Bo Price finished second in the mile at 4:09.09, just three-hundredths of a second behind the winner. Sophomore Rob Morrow ran 8:42.14 to finish 17th in the 3,000 meters.

On the women's side, junior Jessa Chance ran a personal best 4:55.97 in the mile to finish fifth, while freshman Monique Ortega (5:01.51) placed 10th and freshman Brittany McGuire (5:12.86) finished 20th. Sophomore Angela Marvin ran a 10:25.23 to place 12th in the 3,000 meters, while freshman Brittany Brockman (17:09.47) finished seventh and senior Erin Dixon (18:05.01) placed 16th in the 5,000 meters.

The Bears are off next weekend before returning to action at the Big 12 Indoor Championships Feb. 27-28 at Bob Devaney Sports Center Track in Lincoln, Neb.
